I didn't perceive any oriental type sweetness in this one: Just a pleasant, incense woodiness and smokiness that centers unpretentiously on the basic oud sensation I personally think it should be. Versace did it right, releasing a fragrance that really is a bridge between Occidental and Oriental perfumery, combining European attitude with Eastern materials.Not surprisingly, the rarity of the oud and the difficulty of harvesting it means oud oil is thought to be the most expensive in the world.

The exception, is the little bit at the start, but mostly just seems like more or less a non-descript "woody" smell in general to my nose. Part of 1667’s La Collection Royale which is inspired by Louis XIV, also known as ‘the fragranced king’ (who used to scent the fountains of Versailles with rose petals), it opens with a burst of ripe citrus fruits before melting into a spiced floral heart of neroli, lavender, baies rose, coriander, cardamom and nutmeg. Pure patchouli, smoky Haitian vetiver, amber, vanilla and sandalwood add depth, richness and texture, finished off with a smooth, temperate musk in the base.
