The controls in WRC Generations certainly feels balanced, and a few tweaks to the tried and tested formula help to add a new level of depth to handling corners and managing terrain. Depending on whether you’re racing over snow, asphalt, or gravel, you’ll need to approach terrain as a new kind of challenge. Weather can also impact the ground, and if you’re not careful you can spin out or put in too much power into a corner. The vibrations in the controller and the excellent sound design help you to know how to manoeuvre each course, but with dynamic weather changing conditions mid-race, there’re always new challenges thrown at you.

Overall though, WRC Generations does well. Tyre types, for instance, have a dramatic effect on handling so you need to be mindful of weather conditions. As the new hybrid was implemented in the 2022 season, the game features brand-new car models based on the Ford Puma Rally1, Hyundai i20 N Rally1 and Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 respectively. To simulate the needs of the hybrid engines, additional features have been incorporated into the gameplay. To make things fairer, there are six leagues: Beginner, junior, rookie, professional, champion and legend. Leagues can be done solo or there is a Team Leagues option where all player points combine for an overall total. For gamers who enjoy competition, the new Leagues feature allows them to battle online opponents of a comparable skill level. To climb the Legends category ladder, place higher than your rivals.WRC Generations is not without its flaws in this area. Most are unproblematic however an occasional game crash can ruin a good race and it is hard to pinpoint the cause. Play on a controller and you will have a fun time. Cars do not change direction as enthusiastically and so steering is easier. I still reduced the sensivity out of taste, but there is less of a need. Those inconsistent elements stretch to the audio and visuals. In terms of sound and WRC Generations brings the immersion in spades, with engines screaming, tyres crying as they give up the ghost and co-drivers calling the shots, hoping you’re going to take their input as read. Occasionally we’ve had some weirdnesses in rev drops, but mostly all is fine.

With a hyper-realistic and ultra-precise physics engine, WRC 10 has made the feeling of driving even better, with better aerodynamic force, turbo and braking management, on all surfaces. The sound design has also been revamped to reinforce the immersion. But, look away from the cars – and perhaps the stage surroundings – and Generations disappoints. Crowds are cookie cutter at best and lighting is sometimes off. We’ve raced a few events where the glare of a wet road is like racing on a mirrored surface. It just looks a bit, well, crap frankly. It’s with that in which the realism comes grinding to a halt. On the plus side, development manpower was spent redesigning Corsica from WRC 8 and Rally Sweden, which moved location for the 2022 series. What I will say is that perhaps it is the brighter game audio and synthetic twang that some players dislike. The reality is that it is pretty accurate – It just sounds a little overdone on the transmission whine. If you are familiar with how the Daily & Weekly Challenges worked in previous WRC titles you will feel a certain familiarity as they are randomly generated through the stages, cars & weather conditions available in WRC Generations.
