It really does take some time to dial in. You can get a nice crema from the Cafflano Kompresso. Although you will need to use freshly ground coffee beans at the right grind size. But it’s very possible to get cafe quality shots if you get everything right. It’s great to learn that there’s something like this out there; I hadn’t heard of it before. Thank you for sharing this! Obviously, there is no real portafilter here. Instead, there is a small basket filter, that can take around 12-15 grams of coffee. I have found that the funnel that comes with the Aeropress works great for adding grounds. To look at, the Cafflano Kompresso is a bit odd-looking. With the big plunger and the coffee basket, it won’t be winning any awards for being beautiful. But, it works and ultimately that’s all that really matters.

The Final Verdict

This brewer has many things going for it but speed is not one of them. Especially not when paired with a hand grinder. It can easily take 5-8 minutes to make a single shot, which is pretty damn slow. The device doesn’t feel heavy duty and at first, I was a bit afraid to exert full pressure using it. It turns out that it can easily handle both normal use and more extreme scenarios where almost all my body weight is placed on the device. Get a quality grinder: Once you have good, freshly roasted beans you need to grind them. You'll want a burr grinder, which grinds your beans evenly rather than chopping them like a blade grinder. The basket is a standard, non-pressurized model that can hold up to 18 grams of ground coffee. It means that you can pull an excellent 50 ml double shot. If you’re familiar with dosing, tamping and brewing espresso it should be pretty easy to start using the Cafflano Kompresso. The only thing I can be a little bit worried about is the rubber ring sitting on the shower screen. A little bit of misalignment and I fear that an accident could happen. Hopefully, (like with the Aeropress) it’s easy and cheap to get a replacement. Made from non-BPA plastic, with some parts made of stainless steel, it doesn’t feel like it’s heavy-duty. But it can withstand a lot of pressure. This includes putting almost all of my 200lb bodyweight on it when I have messed up and ground my coffee too finely.
