The 26-year-old Cambridge graduate is a rising star at his London law firm, he lives in a swanky penthouse flat in Clerkenwell in central London, and plays as hard as he works - and he works very hard. They were originally brought to Uganda by the British as part of a policy that would establish a middle class to serve as a buffer between the European and African populations. For me, reading this book was like a very though history lesson – I was not aware at all of the history of Uganda.

It follows Sameer, a young high-flying lawyer living in present day London who is struggling to decide about his future. The list of resources, journals, and further reading is the most exhaustive I have ever seen in index to a commercial novel! Naipaul dealt with some very interesting post-colonial issues in A Bend in the River, but without the dual framework employed here, which, as you say, lends a great deal of depth to the story. I kind of saw writing in the same way that I saw acting or singing, anything that you would maybe have to be a little bit lucky to get your break. They are written by Hasan, starting on the night of his marriage to his second wife, to his first wife and true-love Amira (who died unexpectedly).

They most resemble the hoopoes with their long curved bills, used to probe for insects, and short rounded wings. Her focus on identity and how Sameer struggles to find himself and life direction is central to the whole narrative. Found in tropical woodlands worldwide, they feed on insects and fruit, and their broad bills and weak legs reflect their diet and arboreal habits.The point is explicitly stated that the British were to blame for the simmering discontent that led to the deposition of the kabaka, and the eventual power grab by the army. The ending too was really grating (it reminded me of The Saint of Incipient Insanities and The Secret of the Grain) and made me want to scream: what was the point of it all?

I can't find the words to describe how much I adored every, single, beautiful word of this totally amazing story. The males have black and dark-brown plumage, an erectile crest on the nape and a larger bill than the female.The epistolary sections (1947-1981) written by Hasan didn’t come across as a convincing description of tragic loss, and the subject matter could just as easily been the thoughts of a third party narrator addressing the reader. However, they differ in that they have metallic plumage, often blue, green, or purple, and lack an erectile crest.
