The majestic forest that surrounds the Hakushu Distillery shelters an abundance of plant varieties reflecting the many expressions of Japanese nature. Palate - Herbacious, slightly resinous, cucumber and mint with the former fading quickly and the latter hanging in longer. Hakushu is nestled deep in the Mountains of Japan's Southern Alps and with a local water source of exceptional purity the 'house style' shows wonderful freshness and delicate peaty notes. Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii began building Japan's first whisky distillery on the outskirts of Kyoto in 1923 to produce Yamazaki. The Hakushu range of whiskies, with their crisp and vibrant feel, each one unique in a single malt whisky, will enliven your palate and liberate your senses. The flavour was softened by the exceptionally pure mountain water, filtered through old granite rocks. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. This wonderous whisky is brimming with peppermint, melon, cucumber, yuzu, grapefruit, lemon, thyme and a touch of subtle smoke.This is an unaged expression and is blended by Master Blender Keizo Saji at Suntory's incredible Hakushu Distillery. Keizo Saji inherited his father’s vision in his quest for innovation and constructed this second Suntory distillery in 1973. The malt whiskies born here are simultaneously blessed with a very particular microclimate, verdant forests, and water offering a rare softness and purity, only made possible by filtration of rain and snow through thousand-year-old granite rocks. The blenders accepted the challenge of working with peat, made possible due to the distillery’s surrounding environment.A more affordable replacement for the now delisted 10 year old Hakushu and is a summery and fresh delight of a malt. From the Hakushu distillery in the foothills of Mount Kaikomagatake comes their Distiller's Reserve single malt whisky, a no-age-statement expression, that captures the smoky, herbaceous characteristics of their whiskies.
