If you just want to learn the core rules you could probably go Recruit, but remember that the extra units you get are high movement high damage output and so introduce the idea of battlefield roles and illustrate what higher performing units do. With composing books for a lifestyle game such as Warhammer it’s a good idea to be mindful that it somebody with no idea whatsoever of what Warhammer is could pick this book up for the first time.

I had a few near breakages whilst I was assembling the Necron Warriors in particular and I had one that broken completely.The books don’t get covered in dents and teeth marks from the miniatures and the miniatures don’t get battered and bent – a good way to pack a product like this. These are usually far more visually impressive than they have any business being for the function they serve. Packed along with this stuff you’ll find the obligatory bag-o-bases for all of the models in the set and a set of 10 white six-sided dice.

Once you’re confident of your mastery of the basics, the Recruit Manual goes on to suggest some additional units with which to expand the Space Marines and Necrons forces in the set, and even provides you with their datasheets and a new mission to play once you’ve done so! Elite Edition offers the perfect upgrade, with additional units in the form of Skorpekh Destroyers and Outriders, led by a mighty Necron Overlord and Primaris Captain.The main attraction of 40k is the miniatures, but there are also many video games, board games, books, ect. After playing through all six missions with a friend or family member, you can even try swapping sides to see if you can do better while reinforcing what you’ve learned. Necron Warriors: The mainstay of the Necron phalanxes, these bipedal warriors obliterate their prey with relentless volleys of atomising gauss weaponry.

In it, you’ll find a detailed description of the grimdark setting of Warhammer 40,000, as well as an overview of the Space Marines and Necrons pitted against one another in the set. which isn’t super helpful for someone who’s got interest and some painting experience but is not a seasoned veteran of tabletop wargaming. I was able to repair it easily enough but it did make me question whether these are the best models for a beginner to be having a go at.

The Elite Edition is a slight upgrade that you would mainly get if you wanted a slightly bigger army to play with on both sides. Outriders: Take the fight to the enemy flanks from the back of armoured bikes with these far-ranging reconnaissance riders. What’s more, expanding your Elite Edition is easy – grab a Recruit or Command Edition, and check out the huge ranges for Necrons and Space Marines! This set also replaces the Lieutenant and Royal Warden with a Space Marine Captain and Necron Overlord, giving both sides a little bit more hitting power.
