One of the most technologically advanced road cycling helmets on the market, the Giro Vanquish MIPS Aero bike helmet is filled with features to streamline airflow for reduced drag and increased aero efficiency. TransformAir technology gives you that extra little nudge, while the RocLoc Air system works to add cooling power and maximise comfort. The two-piece shell combines a tough outer hard shell with a polycarbonate lower shell permanently fused to the liner However, it’s worth noting that the shield was also the source of two frustrations, as well. First, getting the shield into the up position sometimes requires a bit of finesse to get just right. The magnets, while stronger, are hidden inside the helmet, so you cannot as easily get it placed (especially while riding). Second, and really more serious, the lens has “Vivid Optics by Zeiss” printed on the bottom left. This was a pretty annoying distraction that constantly entered our field of vision. And while it would not prevent us from buying or recommending the Vanquish, we feel like it was significant enough to warn anyone considering purchasing the Vanquish. (Note to Giro: make a version of the shield with the lettering removed and you really will have us sold!) The peak of the helmet is far enough from the top of the glasses to prevent obstruction while the two ventilation holes double up as excellent ports to house the arms of your glasses. Additionally, Giro builds each Vanquish MIPS helmet with a dual-layer EPS foam liner, with a softer-density foam next to the head and a harder, more durable foam further out near the four-piece polycarbonate shell. We rode both with and without the shield, and honestly we found we preferred the shield on. The ventilation was that good, and the unobstructed view beat even some of the sunglasses we routinely ride with. At that time the helmet was the only change to my equipment. In the meantime, riders in the market for a new top-end aero road helmet who have historically fit well in Giro head forms may want to wait until December before making a decision. Time will tell if the Vanquish MIPS is truly as good as Giro claims, but at the very least, it certainly seems well worth considering. The inclusion of MIPS and those two EPS foam liners would suggest a weighty number, but the Eclipse Spherical comes in at 277g on our scales for a medium. There is one issue I have with the Vanquish and whilst it might be relatively trivial to many it is the proverbial fly in the ointment for me. The looks. When it first arrived, the squared off shaping and awkward split personality styling reminded me of a Horseshoe Crab (look it up). Not the most beautiful of creatures. The MIPS system consists of a low-friction layer between the EPS lining and the padding with an elastic fixation. This allows the helmet to move slightly (slide or rotate) during a crash. It will move around your head to absorb the lateral and rotational forces that could occur. This in contrast to a helmet without MIPS, which only absorbs the impact through compression of the EPS lining. Now onto those aero claims. The Vanquish MIPS, with the shield visor in place, scored very highly in our own independent wind-tunnel testing in 2019, consistently up there with the Specialized Evade 2 across a range of yaw angles and speeds.
