Jurassic World: The Legacy of Isla Nublar received positive reception from several reviewers who played it prior to release. [11] Charlie Hall of Polygon played the first three sessions and called the game a "meaty cooperative experience with a confident pace, one that seems to expertly toe the line between the unexpected and the familiar". He considered it "more than just a movie tie-in", writing, "This could be the crossover success that brings the legacy genre of board games into the mainstream". He praised the mini-games, finding them to be "engaging" yet "simple without being dumbed down". [1] William Cennamo of Screen Rant called the game "a fantastic entry into the world of legacy-style games, easy enough for the whole family yet filled with enough strategic decisions for veteran board gamers". [9] When measuring if a player is successful in their chosen task, Jurassic World is all about the dice. Rolling is how all actions are completed; the character sheets show the number of dice rolled by each character to attempt a task. But over the last decade, the best legacy games have all taken popular board games or board game genres and sort of draped a larger storyline on top of them. Design studio Prospero Hall is approaching things from a slightly different angle. It’s next title, Jurassic World: The Legacy of Isla Nublar, will be the first legacy-style board game ever based on a major motion picture — five major motion pictures, to be exact, as it spans the entire Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment film franchise. That leaves developers with plenty of memorable narratives, characters, and critters to go around. Jurassic World is a game where players work together to manage a dinosaur park. Each player chooses an employee to help them look after the park. Employees have various skills, which allow them to place buildings and create dinosaurs for example. You spread word about the park by entertaining your visitors. However, be careful! The more dinosaurs the park contains, the greater the chance of break outs with gruesome consequences.

Jurassic World is a cooperative, dice-based worker placement style game for 2–6 players, but we feel works best with 4-5. The game is themed around the first Jurassic World movie (the one where Chris Pratt & Bryce Dallas Howard’s characters are not arrested at the end, despite being responsible for most of the deaths in the movie) and places you in the control room to manage and develop the park. Isla Nublar’s greatest strength is how far it leans into the evolving nature of legacy games. In the first adventure, the board is totally empty. A grid of 18 squares represents the different sectors of the island, there’s a few landmarks like mountains and lakes, and you have a couple predetermined habitats for some dinosaurs, but that’s it. Early on, you’ll start adding structures, roads, and fences to the island, organizing it in a way that’s safe for your dinosaurs, your staff, and eventually, your guests. The transformation the island goes through from adventure to adventure is quite remarkable, and even more impressive, it’s entirely unique to your group. No two Isla Nublars will look the same in the end. You have a lot of control over how you design the island, but as you might expect, there’s a lot that’s outside of your control too. Jurassic World: The Legacy of Isla Nublar is a legacy board game for two to four players, ages 10 and up. [1] [2] The game follows the plots of the first five Jurassic Park films. [1] It is set on Isla Nublar, the fictional island featured in several films. As in the first Jurassic Park film, the players' goal is to build a dinosaur theme park on the island and achieve a lasting legacy. [1] Players choose from several playable characters, including Dr. Alan Grant, Dr. Ellie Sattler, Dr. Ian Malcolm, John Hammond, Dr. Henry Wu, and Robert Muldoon. The variation in playable characters is interesting, but we found you basically have to have certain characters to win. For example, most starting actions are finance based, so you are not going to get far without The Director. Placing & capturing dinosaurs is much, much easier if you bring The Ranger.
