Description

Chromatic aberration is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software. Falloff of illumination towards the corners is typical of a fast aperture lens like this. The corners are 2.28 stops darker than the image centre at f/1.4 and visually uniform illumination is achieved by f/5.6. The lens also features weather-sealing to provide anti-dust and water-protection capabilities, a nice touch given the low price. Optical construction is 11 elements in 8 groups, including 1 ED (Extra Low Dispersion) and 4 HR (High Refractive Index). The diaphragm comprises 9 blades and produces a circular aperture, to improve the bokeh. Samyang also claims that the absence of aspheric elements in the design means that there is no distortion to the bokeh, resulting in perfectly rounded, out-of-focus highlights. Manual focus isn't for everyone, but if you have the patience (and work more with subjects that sit still, like mountains and buildings) they can be highly rewarding and good fun to use. Many of Samyang's manual-focus primes have had no electronics at all, thus requiring the aperture to be set manually via the control ring. While this does limit the modes you can use, and cause a dark viewfinder image at narrow apertures, it can be an enjoyably tactile experience that feels like "pure" photography. There is a basic lens hood and lens pouch included. The lens hood is plastic and unremarkable, but it seems to do a pretty decent job. Samyang describe this lens as a 'Portrait lens', which may explain some of the characteristics of its optical performance. At f/1.4 sharpness in the centre of the frame is only fairly good, and towards the edges, 'dreamy' would be a good way of describing the clarity here. This is all well and good for flattering a portrait subject, but not for much else. Stopping the lens down improves clarity across the frame, but the sharpness towards the edges still lags way behind that of the centre until around f/8. Weighing in at 568 grams and measuring 9.99cm in length, the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE is a fairly big lens given its focal length, although it's actually about the same size as the Samyang AF 50mm f/1.4 FE optic that we've previously reviewed.Vignette becomes very mild by F2 and essentially gone by F2.8. This is actually quite a good performance for a wide aperture 85mm lens. Lenses like the Zeiss Otus or Milvus 85mm lenses show very heavy vignette at wide apertures. It's also the latest Samyang lens to feature auto-focusing, incorporating an Ultrasonic Dual Linear stepping motor for smooth and accurate autofocusing.There is no hyperfocal distance scale, or hard infinity stop, which is unusual for a lens like this, which uses no low dispersion glass in its optical design.
