Richard Keith Robert Coles FRSA FKC (born 26 March 1962) [1] is an English writer, radio presenter and Church of England clergyman who was the vicar of Finedon in Northamptonshire from 2011 to 2022. He first came to prominence as the multi-instrumentalist who partnered Jimmy Somerville in the 1980s band the Communards. They achieved three UK top ten hits, including the No. 1 record and best-selling single of 1986, a dance version of " Don't Leave Me This Way". [6] The following year, they had their biggest hit with an energetic hi-NRG [7] cover version of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' soul classic " Don't Leave Me This Way" (in a version inspired by Thelma Houston's cover) which spent four weeks at number one and became the UK's biggest selling single of 1986. [8] It also made the US top 40. It featured Sarah Jane Morris as co-vocalist, taking advantage of the contrast between Morris' deep and rounded contralto and Somerville's soaring falsetto. [6] The Communards split in 1988; Somerville began a solo career the following year. He released his debut solo album Read My Lips in November 1989, [1] which contained three UK Top 30 hits, including a hit cover of Sylvester's disco song " You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and a cover of " Comment te dire adieu?", a duet with June Miles-Kingston, which reached number 14 in the UK Singles chart. He also sang on the second Band Aid project at the end of 1989.

The Communards’ sophomore album ‘Red’ consolidated thegenius of the musical partnership between Bronski Beat singer Jimmy Somerville and pianist Richard Coles. The Communards straddled pop and the political, fusing synths and hi-NRG production with lush string and horn arrangements to the political unrest and moral panic of late 80s Britain.
