This is not a novel that gives away its plot easily, and that suspense and intrigue is deftly and beautifully executed the whole way through. If you like snark, irony, and dark humor, and are willing to not take the book too seriously this is fun and fresh.She is brought up in a foster family who is rich and has a lot of opportunities in life, but she hates rich people. She’s very funny (it’s black humour of course) and I confess to liking her wry dark style and admiring her superb put down lines and wish I’d thought of them! A friend lent me the book having enjoyed it herself but I found it very dull with none of the wit or joy of the film and of course I knew more or less what was coming at the end. Grace is on a revenge mission, taking out every one of her estranged upper class family to settle a score and inherit the family wealth. I want to shed a tear but I could not care less as her mother died of cancer and not from overworking or anything like that.

I really enjoyed her dry narrative and found this book very engaging because of her brilliantly three dimensional characterisation. I absolutely loved this book - so original, refreshing, different to anything else out there at the moment. None of these idiots are thinking about climate change, they’re wondering what to wear on the yacht tomorrow. I’m no Pollyanna, but reading books that are critical of everybody else, whether intended to be satirical or not, tends to be a negative experience.There are occasions in the narrative where you burst out laughing but it’s one of those laughs you know you shouldn’t release and so you check over your shoulder to check no one’s heard! after that little discovery, the constant digs at privileged white people prompted a few eye rolls from me. Grace is clearly intelligent for example— she comes up with ingenious ways to kill her relatives without leaving any trail. Instead, after one murder we jump back to the present, or back further in the past, as Grace decides to recount her life story along with the murders.

Overall, this is very easy to read, it’s well written, I love the darkly wry style of the author who has acquired a new fan! Meanwhile, her current husband says he’s hoping Mackie sells millions of copies of How to Kill Your Family so they never have to work again.
