The Escort MAX 360c offers a Novice mode that omits all the extra information and tells the driver to slow down if a threat is close. This is great if you struggle with technology or don't want to take the time to learn what every alert means. The R8 has a 12 different alert tones each of which can be assigned to the specific band or type of radar and laser. My recommendations for tone selection are: Laser tends to get easier to detect when one drives with lighter colored vehicles having sloped hoods because of reflections from the hood tend to be more easily “seen” by the laser sensor so those results are subjected to improving further. Overall we were pleased with the R8’s laser detection, although we always would like more.

The false rejection is also much better than the previous generation and even beats the Redline 360c. Bluetooth Functionality Even so, it provided good detection performance and was very cool looking, but it simply wasn’t up to the performance of Escort radar detectors. Launching at CES 2022, the Uniden R8 aims to replace its predecessor, R7 and brings advanced improvements like upgraded dual LNA design, improved button positioning and better range. It was first made available in April of 2022 and can also be considered a direct competition to radar detectors like the Escort Redline 360c and the Valentine 1 Gen2. The Uniden R8 has an extra filter called ‘Advanced Mode+’ which will provide extra protection against false alerts caused by automatic doors and garage openers that often happen on highways. This is a great feature if you live in an area with a lot of automatic doors around you. False Alert Filtering Extreme sensitivity to all police radar bands (X-band, K-band, 33.8 & 34.7 & 35.5 Ka-band) only second to the Redline 360cThe Uniden R9 comes complete with front and rear radar antennas, six laser jamming heads, a GPS module, external speaker, a full multi-colored display module, keypad, and connecting and mounting components. I'm all for improvements and while impressive, I think a 13 mile detection is in the realm of too much advance notice. Anything beyond 2 miles ahead is a little unnecessary unless you're cruising at 150MPH+, which you really shouldn't be doing on public roads anyways. We love options as much as the next person, but too many alerts can muddy the waters. Keeping all five band detections mentioned above at their highest sensitivity will have your radar detector talking like it's gossip time at the water cooler. If we learned anything from "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," we know that false alerts can cause desensitization when real threats are present. This is where the sensitivity adjustments and driving modes give you a leg up in the game. The ability to change the sensitivity of a particular frequency is huge. The X-band, for example, is so seldomly used that most people turn this detection off. Memory Quota lets you set the individual number of Mute Memory and User Marks. In total, the R8 can save up to 2,000 points between the two, but you can allocate that one way or another in 50-point increments.

Highway Radar on Android is currently building integration for the R4 and R8, but that’s still in development. Blendmount

To test the falsing potential, we did drive with the Gatso detection feature enabled and we did find it falsed occasionally to K-band collision avoidance systems of certain vehicles more so than it did with just MRCD/MRCT enabled. Still, it didn’t false to such a degree that it was not tolerable. As Uniden continues refining this detector which future firmware updates, I trust its falsing frequency will decrease.
