The events in the book do bring up unpleasant memories of situations of fear and harassment that women all over have endured because of the perverted view of certain men who try to find their own worth, in the pain of the women around them. The author's note at the end of the book provides a condensed insight into the 'incel' community, ensuring that it isn't simply fiction, but an existing and escalating movement of 'women-haters.' This book follows four nurses throughout a year. Some in their personal lives and most in their lives in the hospital. Written by an RN and BSN, this critical care book is unique in that it not only provides guidance for the critical care nurse but daily inspiration and journal space, as well, which is incredibly beneficial to nurses. The author recounts actual experiences he has had as a surgeon and comments on the abilities and limitations of the field, offering a very balanced view of the profession. Alexandra Robbins not only shows, she tells in this revealing expose of the modern day state of nursing. Interspersing the stories of four women who chose nursing, as their career, is the reality of the good, the bad and the ugly of our nations hospitals, staffing and the health care system. Robbins balances this gloomy picture with testimony from nurses on why they sign up and sign on for this often-thankless job. Though those considering a career in nursing could be discouraged by this narrative, Robbins concludes with some practical solutions to correct the problem, leaving us with a sense of hope. It is an eye-opener not to be missed.

These stories are likely not representative of all nurses, however. All four protagonists work in hospital emergency rooms in the same unnamed city; all four are American-born white women under 45 (per the author, the average age of American nurses is 47); three are close friends with each other, and the fourth is a friendly acquaintance. I suspect the author has taken significant creative license, given the amount of dialogue and detail, and the fact that although she follows these women for a predetermined one-year period, all four stories wrap up with Hollywood endings. These stories are crazily on the edge. The figure of the nurse appears frequently – dispassionate, fond of gossip, worn out. It takes a strong stomach to read Dr HA Moynihan, in which a dental nurse helps her dentist grandfather yank out all his own teeth. And the tragic juxtaposition of two voices in Mijito – a teenage mother and the overworked nurse for whom a bruised baby is one more case on a long list. The tension between Marian and her husband, along with the details on his gaslighting and abusive nature, wasn’t relevant to the main story and served as a needless distraction. The Danish Netflix series is based on the award-winning nonfiction true book The Nurse: The True Story Behind One of Scandinavia’s Most Notorious Criminal Trials, which documents the chilling story.

This is an interesting insider look at nursing. It doesn’t seem intellectually rigorous, so I’d take it with a grain of salt, but it is compelling reading. The Nurse: A gripping psychological thriller with a shocking

Relating to any of the characters was pretty much impossible. It felt like watching a slow thriller on the screen. That should’ve been a plus, but since it was too slow, the effect got diluted. The Nurses is told through the real-life stories of four women in different hospitals. We read about these bedside heroes, who perform on a daily basis, in a world full of joy, heartbreak, violence, humor and emotional turmoil. This non-fiction memoir tells the story of a young nurse who worked at a west-side Chicago hospital during a time when drug use was rampant. She tells about her experience with stress and triumph and offers a very interesting look into nursing to which all nurses can relate. Meanwhile, our anonymous creep, AKA 'Him' has been watching Nell for weeks. A heavy participant of incel forums, Him feels that by stalking women just proves his dominance over women. Nell just simply was in the wrong place at the wrong time. And time is running out for Nell to be rescued...

This was a very intense thriller novel from Claire Allen. The author kept the intensity very high throughout this fascinating story. I appreciated the multiple points of view and that the story felt completely believable, as it could easily be a news story in real life. I really enjoyed THE NURSE and I hope you will too!

It takes amazing skill to turn such an agonising subject matter into an unputdownable plot, the way Claire Allan has done with 'The Nurse.' Her story-telling technique is unfaltering, be it in the tangible portrayal of Nell's sheer terror, Stephen's helplessness, Marian's alternating feelings of grief, dread and numbness, or in the characterization of the antagonist whose twisted POV invokes revulsion and outrage in the reader. These poor nurses are driven to hard drugs and suicide by the demands of the job. This book offers a much-needed discussion of the conflicts that can sometimes arise between nurses when working in close quarters for long hours begins to take its toll. Nurse bullying can be a problem, but knowing how to spot it before it gets out of hand and knowing how to handle confrontational situations provides nurses with the necessary steps to diffuse such situations.
