I read this book mostly because I was out of the country for the primaries and run-up to the election. A fast and easy read (like a tabloid) it was interesting to get a behind the scenes look and it was surprising to see how much of that news actually DID make it out of the US. Strauss becomes prolific at the social marketing skill, and becomes addicted to his casanova killer abilities. But as is so often the case, the higher levels of his skill (seduction) lessens the inner drive and excitement he feels towards his conquest. The chase becomes not only boring, but a bit frightening. Not a spoiler here, but the author reflects. He ponders. He accidentally finds an inner moment observing from third person where his life has now taken him. Of course, this book was written in the early 2000s, when people had the spare time to spend thousands of dollars on workshops on how to talk to women.The anecdotes and gossip make this worth reading, as does the perspective that comes from reading the events of 2008 in one monograph, as opposed to living those events over the course of two torturous years. That said, the essential narrative of the primary campaigns and general election, and the basic characterizations of the people involved, are basically the same media narrative that gelled as we all lived through it. Hillary is a good person whose campaign was ridden by internal conflicts, and who had trouble connecting with people even as she really wanted to b The authors focus on defining, building, and creating organization wide adoption of cultural beliefs as the means to change the culture. The vehicle to achieving these results is joint accountability to create experiences which change personal beliefs. Only when beliefs are changed will the proper actions be taken which lead to achieving the key results. a thrilling, terribly fun read---a gossipy, soapy treat for anyone who avidly followed the 2008 presidential campaign and is already familiar with the larger-than-life personalities here on display.

As a leader you have to change the experiences, beliefs and actions of your people. As the right experiences foster beliefs, improved beliefs influence actions and focussed actions produce results. You need to get all of your people involved and motivated, changing a culture is a team effort. I thought if was facinating to read about all of the 2008 presidental candidates from a journalist's perspective. No one came out of this book unscathed. Joseph Monninger is a master storyteller with an understated and cumulatively beautiful prose style. His latest, Game Change, is one of the best sports novels I’ve ever read. It’s one of the best young adult novels too—but I want to point out that it transcends both categories: it’s bigger than simply a sports novel or a young adult novel.
