From cheapest to most expensive, here are the chronographs I’ve tested hands-on! 1. Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph For center-fire rifles and revolvers only, not compatible with airguns or rim-fire. (Note: Not compatible with the Large Brake Adapter or the V3 Rail Adapter.) Another concern is that you need to shoot through the chrono for it to work. Having used it for the past 4 years, I've come to love this chrono after having owned several other models not featured here. To be honest, I've never tried a MagnetoSpeed. While I have looked at them, I never liked the fact that you have to attach something directly to the barrel. If you're like me and shoot a lot of rounds, particularly during load development, I would think you could start melting things to the barrel... but not on my rifles! Plus how does a magnetic sensor work for a pistol? Just turn it on, wait a few seconds, and shoot. The number is clear to read or you run an Aux line to your phone to record the data. Caldwell Chrono with extra light things and tripod To get the most out of your precision rifle, you need an understanding of what your projectile is going to do once it leaves the barrel of the firearm. This is where a chronograph comes into play. Precision shooters need Data of Previous Experience (DOPE) to know exactly how to reach out and hit steel. The chronograph provides an essential part of that data, the velocity of the projectile when leaving the muzzle of the firearm. Unique 3-piece clamp works with both Arca & Picatinny rails, needing just one slot for installation and 2” of rail space. Two-way adjustment via four stainless steel adjustment rods should provide adequate movement of the bayonet for nearly all rifles. There is NO CANT adjustment of the bayonet, meaning if you have an angled forend or a rail that is not parallel with your barrel, this mount will not work for your rifle. The MagnetoSpeed Sporter chronograph was designed to be used on barrels from 1/2 inch up to 1 inch in diameter. In can also accommodate muzzle brakes and flash hiders up to 2.7 inches in length. Ideal for contoured rifle barrels (sporter barrels) and long-barrelled revolvers.

a few years ago when I asked every person at the gun range if they liked their chrono? and would they buy it again? Or buy something else.. At that time 80% said buy Labradar. It costs more but its better..Well several years later I asked the same question to about as many people as before at the gun range and competitions..The answers have change with alot of rants on Labradar.. It misses Shots..It wont connect via Bluetooth half the time.. It will disconnect after 3 shots.It quit working when using my suppressor..I had to buy the Air Gun Trigger to make it work .The Doppler misses shots. I mean really, it’s a fairly niche case that you need hard data on the exact speed of your bullets. The MagnetoSpeed V3 ballistic chronograph kit was designed to be used on barrels and suppressors from 1/2 inch all the way up to 2 inches in diameter. In addition to the larger diameter tolerance, the V3 also has one inch more clearance in the blast zone to account for longer (up to 3″ in most cases) muzzle brakes, flash hiders, etc. The second major issue I had was actually triggering the unit. While it claims that it can work with rimfire and airguns, I found it nearly impossible to work with my NRL22 rifles without buying some of the extras that Labradar offers.

Control Unit – The unit is easy to navigate, and the included instruction manual goes over the basics of how to move your way around the device. The only limitation to the V3 is that it is only able to give you data on the muzzle velocity of your shots. Other chronographs can be setup downrange to capture speeds at different distances. What is the difference between the V3 and Sporter Models?

Because it is a large bayonet that straps onto your barrel — this can shift your point of impact while it is attached. It can also mess with your rifle harmonics and open or close your groups oddly. MagnetoSpeed V3 The one issue that I have with the Magneto Speed and why I still use my old Prochrono (besides for load development for my semi-auto and short barreled pistols) is that your point of impact WILL be different with and without the bayonet attached. Depending on caliber and bullet weight, I have seen as much as 1-1.5 inches shift (and not always in the same direction) of my groups. Group size doesn't appear to be affected, but POI does shift. With the LabRadar, you get a string of data per shot, 5 user pre-set distances out to 99 yards. So you get much more information than just the muzzle velocity. Loading for multiple rifle and pistol calibers, the LabRadar allows me to get into the nitty gritty of fine tuning my reloads.

Precision long range is very velocity dependent. Having accurate data on your ammo is a must-have for proper DOPE. All of the ballistic calculators in the world won’t help if your velocity is off to start with. I would only recommend the Labradar to users who really want the very best information and are willing to spend the time and effort in setting up and learning the system. The list goes on. But basically, it’s an advanced user kind of thing. But don’t let that scare you — they’re actually easier to get into than you might think. Best Shooting Chronograph China (People’s Republic other than the Special Administrative Regions) (arms embargo and transit control) Bayonet Sensor – The sensor itself is manufactured to withstand a muzzle blast, so use on shotguns and firearms with muzzle breaks isn’t a problem. The entry-level or casual tier Magnetrospeed, the Sporter model is perfect for hunters, casual reloaders, or people just starting out.
