There are many songs written by Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music that are key in my own life and some will always make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up with ‘Angel Eyes’ and ‘Dance Away’ being just two. The song was also featured in a 1986 episode of the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless as well as a 1987 episode of All My Children and a 1989 episode of Santa Barbara. I take the point of the first two reviews, but this is nonetheless a very nicely produced book with an excellent introduction (including one from BF highlighting some of his key lyrics). Seeing the lyrics standing alone on the page in all their glory demonstrates Ferry’s immense poetic talent. Lyrics’ presents his entire body of work, including his six post-Roxy Music solo long players, the latest being 2014’s aptly titled ‘Avanmore’.

In 2011 Ferry was awarded a CBE and in 2012 received the French national honour of l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

All the classic Roxy anthems are here – ‘Virginia Plain’, ‘Do the Strand’, ‘Love is the Drug’ – songs in which the real and the make-believe blend in a kaleidoscopic mix, shot through with cinematic allure. All the great songs from Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry himself are here, from ‘Virginia Plain’, to ‘Pyjamarama’, ‘Do the Strand’, ‘Love is the Drug’, and through the latter years and one of my favourite albums by Roxy Music was Manifesto released in 1979.

On his seminal 1973 solo album These Foolish Things he also covered ’60s hit rock songs like the Rolling Stones' “Sympathy for the Devil” and the Beatles “You Won’t See Me,” establishing something of the formula for his solo albums until the 1980s.
