Conceived as a way in which Sheehan could explore his interest in the siege of Sarajevo in the mid-1990s and what he calls the epidemic of suicide in Ireland’s young people, three old school friends reconvene on a trip through California, trying to help Tom overcome the PTSD he is suffering after experiencing the war in Bosnia – which itself is presented in ghastly detail in alternate chapters. There’s some fine Irish comedy along the way, and Sheehan adeptly pierces the nature of lasting friendship, even if it sometimes teeters on the edge of caricature. It’s the changing of the seasons that is so spell-binding. Visually, the scenery reminds me of a set of four jigsaw puzzles I have of a country scene in each of the four seasons. The landscape the people, the town, and the community events remind me of the folk art of Grandma Moses, although this is a contemporary story, not horse and buggy days. But school concerts and church functions are still hubs of local activity.

Kinder Scout is one of those must-do hikes in the Peak District, the Kinder Plateau is a huge area which has many different routes up. This hike takes you up from Snake Pass exploring the northern edges of Kinder Plateau. It is quieter than the routes from Edale or Hayfield, on sunny days there are also a few great spots to stop for a dip in Fair Brook. Adam Thorpe’s novel Missing Fay begins with the disappearance of a teenage girl. Was she abducted, perhaps murdered, or did she simply run away from her bleak home on a Lincolnshire “sink” estate? With a mentally unstable mother and a stepfather who’s as much use as a wet slice of bread, who could blame 14-year-old… In many ways, nothing else momentous happens; just regular village life, albeit tainted and scarred.It is an important event where people meet, plan, decide, draw designs, cooperate (or not) and finally complete the structure.
