Well, because, despite the fact I clearly see the image of Pipes at this moment, there doesn’t appear to be any mention of this sighting anywhere on the internet. Ghostwatch itself is still as unnerving as ever. As much as one can keep repeating it isn’t real, Manning’s craftwork still has you questioning certain aspects. What really helps sell Ghostwatch is the presenters involved. At the time of broadcast, Sarah Greene was a staple of BBC programming. Working across both kids shows like Going Live and magazine format show Pebble Mill; it made sense that she might be involved in a new programme for the channel. Similarly, the inclusion of Michael Parkinson added credibility to the project. The only slight indicator that something was awry is the addition of Craig Charles. For an North American audience it may not be as convincing as on this side of the pond we're less likely to be familiar with some of the faces involved, but Ghostwatch still makes it very easy to suspend your disbelief for ninety-minutes. Because he’s here now. On my screen, at home with me, where only I seem to see him.I don't have the limited edition...I wish I did! But I have the normal Blu Ray with the latest documentary (which is excellent). The doc features most of the cast and crew reflections (except for Mike Smith of course who passed relatively young age) but the only regret is Parky is not included which is real shame because he was the star, and despite having no acting experience, he was brilliant because, he simply played himself as if he is doing an actual Ghostwatch show. But playing yourself, is not an easy thing to do! The director cleverly, gave Parky room and flexibility to do his thing with just basic guidelines. And boy, did he deliver, giving a performance of skepticism and good ol' Parky mannerisms that we all grew up with. He was brilliant. So was Sarah Greene, who gave, imho, the most outstanding performance out of all of them, including the experienced actors, but turns out she actually did drama school when she was younger so that explains her excellence.

Ghostwatch arrives on Blu-ray from 101 Films in an AVC encoded 1080i high definition transfer framed at 1.33.1, which would likely have been its original broadcast aspect ratio. Shot using television broadcast video cameras, this doesn’t have the same sort of detail and texture that something that was shot on film or higher end digital video might have, but it very much does look like an early nineties TV broadcast, which is exactly how it should look. There’s definitely more depth and noticeably better compression here than on previous DVD offerings.Parky wasn't sure about doing this film but his wife told him to get out of his comfort zone...so I guess he did it out of being an obedient husband, lol. Glad he did. If you’re feeling truly brave (and live close enough), there are two events happening. One is this weekend in Sheffield (as part of Celluloid Screams), the other on Friday 28th October at BFI London. These events offer an immersive viewing experience complete with spooky sound effects, smoke, rattling noises, and all kinds of horror. THN attended the first screening at Celluloid Screams this evening, and whilst we’re keeping our lips sealed about the finer details, we can confirm that they are a ton of fun, and perfectly timed for Halloween. Events start procedural enough, Manning and team going to dedicated lengths to cheat the authenticity of the story. As Ghostwatch unfolds and the ghostly happenings begin to occur, and increase in frequency, there is a shift in the atmosphere. It’s a small shift initially, but builds so much that even the most disbelieving in the audience will begin to waver. Ghostwatch also possesses some strange sorcery that seems to draw weird noises into the viewer’s home. My own personal recent rewatch included an early nocturnal visit from the local fox. Sarah Greene and Craig Charles report from a reputedly haunted London home for the outside broadcast, while Michael Parkinson and Mike Smith stay in the warmth and "safety" of a BBC studio. The Early family are allegedly being harassed by the ghost 'Pipes', so named as his banging and crashing were initially attributed to bad plumbing. After a deliberately slow start the tension gradually builds, culminating in a terrifying crescendo. Although entirely fictional, the masterly combination of great scripting, intuitive direction and perfect casting made the supernatural pastiche appear frighteningly real. Michael Parkinson, an actual BBC newsman, is the host of the show and he interacts with some call-ins and the aforementioned paranormal researcher who explains the details behind the haunting. The reporters sent on the scene are Craig Charles, who interviews some of the people in the neighborhood, and Sarah Greene, who goes inside the house with the family and experiences the activity first hand.Ghostwatch has never been repeated on UK television.
