This one had the same kind of vibes as Home Before Dark by Riley Sager, and I kept remembering that book while reading this one. Of course, no cast of a thrilling adventure isn't complete without the villains of the story and oh,boy, the bad guys of this tale were certainly sinister and creepy and not just a sandwich but a whole hamper short of a picnic. Dread Wood is an amazing story that features four very unlikely heroes, two extremely unlikely villains, and something hidden beneath the school field! I love the characters and the way their relationship naturally grows but there was barely any tension.

I liked the characters, and I really enjoyed the Jurassic World references as a way for the kids to process what was going on around them.I loved that it felt like slightly older children but accessible for readers aged 9-12 (who don’t mind a scare! Jenifer Killick has a great voice and I found the whole story really fluid, original, atmospheric and I especially loved the characters and their friendship that came out of this detention session. Not for the faint-hearted, this edge-of-seat horror is hard to put down, with many chapters ending on a cliff-hanger.

The plot moves quickly enough, and the book kept me interested enough that I didn’t stop to think of it during the story, only once I’d finished it.

I like how this book dealt with poverty, disability (one of which I have never read about in a book before), bullying (whether you mean it or not) and the pressures parents put on you.

The way the children worked together, whilst trying to laugh, caused me to have a few chuckles amongst the horror. As it turns out, they all have personal struggles and it actually bonds them together as they learn more about each other. All of our books are 100% brand new, unread and purchased directly from the publishers in bulk allowing us to pass the huge savings on to you!I don't often read middle grade but the blurb selling this as a book similar to that of a Goosebumps book had me sold, and I wasn't disappointed. When I started the book I had planned on taking my time with it and reading it over a few days but once I started it I couldn't stop reading it. Like most people,each member of the group had their own personal issues and were each harbouring a secret that may or may not have been connected to the events that were currently unfolding. It's great that Jennifer creates characters which allow her to explore how difficult life can be for children at that inbetween stage of transitioning from primary to secondary school. Dread Wood is a YA spooky and creepy story to really make you not want to get a detention at school!
