I first encountered this in a trendy wine bar in Oxford; a wine bar so trendy it had a small list of ‘craft beers’. I enjoyed a chilled bottle or two after a long day at somebody else’s office. There's also an open fire. High chairs line the bar counter (and the tables here are reserved for those wanting just a drink and a chat) where they keep St Austell Tribute and a guest from Keltek or Phoenix on handpump and ten wines by the glass served by courteous staff. This place has been catering for travellers since it was built in the 12th century, and customers today are made just as welcome as they were all those hundreds of years ago. It's a pretty white-painted long house with a great deal of character. It's important to the licensees of this quirky little stone pub that they run the place with environmental awareness (they use green energy and recycle as much as possible) and offer a strong commitment to local producers, which range from farmers and fishermen to the local tea plantation. Walkers, cyclists and even horse riders enjoy this convivial place as it's just 50 metres from the coast-to-coast Portreath to Devoran Mineral Tramways cycle path. The easy-going, roomy bar has an interesting wood-burner set halfway up one wall, a cushioned window seat, wall settles and a few bar stools around just three tables on stripped boards, and bar chairs by the counter. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly. The summer hanging baskets are pretty and there are seats in the garden. Bedrooms are attractive and comfortable and have views of the coast. Leading off the bar is the conservatory family room and there's also a cosy bistro. The six acres of gardens are well worth a wander and offer plenty of seats and picnic-sets under large parasols.

The individually furnished and comfortable bedrooms here have plenty of character, though the stairs up to most of them are fairly steep (staff will carry your luggage). The chatty bar has low beams, flagstones and carpeting, some exposed stone, a big log fire and Bath Gem, St Austell Proper Job and Tribute, Skinners Betty Stogs and Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump, 20 wines by the glass, 40 gins, 30 malt whiskies and farm cider. The excellent modern food cooked by the landlady is, of course, what most customers are here for. But this is no straightforward dining pub: they keep a good choice of drinks such as Sharps Doom Bar and a beer named for the pub on handpump, 25 wines by the glass and a couple of ciders. It's a welcoming and attractive place, and the main bar has a leather armchair beside a log fire in a raised fireplace (fairy lights on the bressumer beam), beer-cask seats, chairs and cushioned window seats by a mix of tables on floor slates, and stools against the wooden counter.
