Mitski’s fifth LP - and second for Dead Oceans ( Slowdive, Khruangbin) - finds the singer finding great emotional depth in her mixture of college rock, grunge and twee-punk. The less glamorous, often overlooked aspect of being a rising star is the sheer amount of work that goes into it.There is plenty of buoyant swagger on Be The Cowboy, but just as much interrogation into self-mythology. Her carefully crafted songs have often been portrayed as emotionally raw, overflowing confessionals from a fevered chosen girl, but in her fifth album, 'Be The Cowboy', Mitski introduces a persona who has been teased but never so fully present until now—a woman in control. Elsewhere on 'Washing Machine Heart', she enacts the wronged woman seemingly tolerating her partner's infidelity : "Baby though I've closed my eyes, I know who you pretend I am".With the mass majority of music critics already lauding 'Be The Cowboy' as one of the top albums of 2018 and Mitski's best to date, I think it would be a great disservice to pass her and this music off as 'wacky' or 'quirky' as I know some people lazily do. It’s funny how only the very old and the very young are permitted to indulge openly in dreams, encouraged to reflect and dwell in poetry.
