Ironing method: Place a clean, white cloth or towel over the moisture stain and set your iron to its lowest heat setting. Gently iron the cloth, moving it in circular motions for about 15 to 20 seconds. The heat from the iron will help lift the moisture from the wood, removing the white stain from its surface.

Vinegar and olive oil: Mix equal parts of white vinegar and olive oil in a bowl. Dip a clean microfibre cloth in the mixture and use it to apply it to the stain, rubbing gently in the direction of the wood grain. Let the cleaning solution sit for a few hours or overnight, then wipe it off. The stain should be lighter and less noticeable. If the wood is very open grained, a white deposit may be left after using the Ring Remover. Simply use a soft brush to brush out the white and then wax using a coloured bees wax. Pour the Rustins Ring Remover onto a lint free cloth and rub with pressure over the mark in the direction of the grain until the mark is removed. For heat marks, mix one part toothpaste with two parts bicarb to form a paste. Apply to the stain, leave for 10 minutes, then wipe off with a cloth. My verdict: I have mixed opinions on this method. On the one hand, it worked surprisingly well in removing the white water stain on my pine dresser. That said, I was, rather predictably, left with a grease mark. I I whipped out a mild abrasive cleaner, worked it over the grease and left it to dry.

How Do You Remove Stains From Wood Without Stripping It?

While it may sound odd given how they’re caused, the easiest way to remove heat marks from wood is typically by applying more heat!

Hydrogen peroxide and bicarbonate of soda: Create a strong cleaning paste by mixing 3% hydrogen peroxide and bicarbonate of soda. Apply the paste to the stain, cover it with plastic wrap, leave it for a few hours, and then wipe it away. Hot dishes can easily burn wooden surfaces, condensation from cool glasses leads to water rings, and food spills can lead to dark stains. My verdict: I followed the advice to mix two parts bicarb with one part water to make a paste and worked the solution into the stain, starting with a fairly dark ring mark. It was ineffective on this stain. The ironing method made little difference to this stain —and there were no significant changes to the white stains either.
