I mentioned before that there were some 5-star passages and A+ dialogue scenes in this book, and there are. They are written with a competence and brilliance that I so rarely see from any other writer, and they are SO GOOD (and usually involved Madeleine). Sometimes I'd read a passage and be like, "DAMN, DAMN. !!!!!" However, from a purely objective standpoint, I do not think, with the combination of weaknesses and strengths in this book, that The Shuddering City is greater than the sum of its parts. There were certainly some awesome scenes, but they read as signs of potential, that this book COULD have been great several drafts into the future. And there were many times I was really disappointed by this. I feel like a few simple cues from an editor would have been enough to remedy the issues in this book. If you catch this issue before it gets worse, you can clean both the disk and the surrounding surface – however, this is a temporary fix and after some time they will need replacing. A brother and sister (Ryan and Jane) along with a couple or so friends get together to go stay in a cabin out in the woods that use to belong to Ryan and Jane's father to have some fun, but what they do not except is that "something" watches them from the woods and it is hungry for some fresh blood! Third, there is a narrative device seemingly lifted right out of N.K. Jemisin's The Fifth Season. In Jemisin's novel, I felt that storytelling was so incredibly strong and the three stories (past-past, past, and present) so skillfully interwoven that I didn't feel cheated. I can't say that about this novel. When it was revealed that half of what I'd been reading was set 50 years in the past, I felt cheated. Shinn built up expectations that the Brandon-Villette story would intertwine with the Jayla/Madeleine/Pietro/Cody story in some way. I expected all these characters to come together. Instead, in a throw-away sentence, the Brandon-Villette story just stops dead and I'm practically told to stop caring about them. (And I did.)

I was a fan of Ahlborn’s work prior to this, but this definitely seals the deal. I will read anything she writes! This was my first time reading this author and I enjoyed her writing style which was very good. Now, for the most part, this was a decent read but one thing that started to take me out of the horror aspect of this novel was all the relationships and dynamics between the main characters. The beginning (aside from the characterizations) started out strong, and with a healthy dose of comical sarcasm thrown in.

There is a lot about their relationships in here and I was more horrified by that than the monsters! The Adler twins, Ryan and Jane, spent a great deal of their childhood at their parent's posh ski cabin. Now that their parents are no longer together, their father has decided to sell the memorable property. A group of friends head to a isolated cabin in the Colorado mountains to go snowboarding. They were not at all prepared for what unfolded.

I love horror and at first, I started to enjoy the characters and the suspense that came with what exactly was going on. Ahlborn does a nice job of building up the tension while revealing bits and pieces here and there. Also, some the decisions made by the characters were questionable, but at the same time, I think that is half the fun.
