If you’re familiar with 1970s British character actors, every single episode of Tales of Unease will draw a hearty “oh, it’s that guy!The productions, of which there were only seven, were all glossy and well mounted and several had the feel of the European horror thriller that was then very much in vogue. As an added bonus, an accompanying booklet written by Andrew Pixley provides an overview of the series' production alongside some insightful viewing notes.

Jack Griffiths’s The Black Goddess is an ensemble piece, but it’s just as well-performed by a cast including Ronald Lewis and Talfryn Thomas. Ride, Ride is a ghostly tale concerning an art student who struggles to get a panicked girl home on the back of his motorcycle. The episodes "It's too late now" and "Bad Bad Jo Jo" were probably my favourite, with "The Black Goddess" and "Ride, Ride" at the other end of the scale.

What the series overall did lack though was some sort of underlying theme or uniting premise behind the decision to tell these particular stories.

A rarely-seen anthology drama series featuring stories full of menace and black humour, Tales of Unease avoids overt horror for a subtler and altogether more unsettling sense of the uncanny. Also jostling for your attention is Superstitious Ignorance, a dark and mysterious episode which poses many questions and, although not all of them are answered, it features a disturbing ending that wrong-foots the viewer - and the central characters - perfectly. The series was script-edited by John Burke, with some of the stories coming from the short story collections of the same name he edited in the late ‘60s. The series was also strongly cast with appearances from the likes of Susan George, James Hazledine, Michael Culver, Talfryn Thomas, Tessa Wyatt, Roy Dotrice and Terence Rigby. There are a number of candidates for best episode of the series, with The Old Banger being my personal favourite.The final ending could have been tighter - it's easy to spot about a minute before the 'official reveal' - but it's a small criticism of a fine half-hour of drama.
