Faces (sometimes erroneously known as The Faces) are an English rock band formed in 1969 by members of the Small Faces after Steve Marriott left that group to form Humble Pie. I suppose like many people I bought this album AFTER "A Nod's As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse" and to be honest at the time, felt short-changed with the plain grey cardboard sleeve. The Faces second album gets rave reviews from most critics and fans, but once again I'm apparently in the minority.

I’m also not big on the generic pub rock of Had Me A Real Good Time while the ragged On The Beach is shockingly produced and sounds like a demo. When it comes to the Faces, the band’s first album should be viewed through the prism of its title: FIRST STEP. One of the funny things about their cover is everyone gives Stewart credit for tearing the crap out of the tune, but if you pay attention, Stewart and Lane share lead vocals.

Richmond sounds like an Americana standard but is another Lane original, the kind of song Keith Richards wishes he wrote, filled with more great guitar work and an appealing, unhurried optimism to the music despite the ambiguity of the lyrics.Propelled by a nifty little guitar from Wood and a catchy chorus, 'Bad In Ruin' was one of their better, if overlooked rockers.
