The author deliberately subverts some of the norms of structure and narration in this book. Why do you think she chose to do this? What do you think the effect is on your reading experience? None at all, really. The jargon is minimal, and it’s all pretty self-explanatory anyway. The chemistry of the small community is essentially the same everywhere; be it a French village, an island, a school or a web community … Never has one of my books received such a “Marmite” reaction. Love it or hate it? What kind of reader are you?So these are VERY unreliable narrators, and you're never sure how much of what B.B writes is fiction and how much is him talking about things he's actually done but in a fictionalised way. The story is full of twists and turns and "Wait, WHAT???" moments where you thought you knew exactly who the characters were and what their motives were but HAHAHAHA NO NOT EVEN CLOSE. Harris may be better-known for her lighter works of magical realism, but she can write a twisty, dark psychological thriller like almost no one else. Like her earlier Gentlemen and Players, this is a multiple-perspective narrative which toys with the many assumptions readers make about identity, reality and truth in fiction. What seems at first to be a straightforward psychological study of a murderer-- a premise which has proved sufficient to inspire many perfectly good suspense thrillers in its own right-- is something much, much more complex and compelling. The collection shows off Harris’s diversity as a writer. The tales in Jigs & Reels touch and the light and dark aspects of life and vary from the funny to the chilling. I also loved the fact Harris included a little note of each story’s origin. I have read some intense books this year, and have loved many, but Blueeyedboy jumps to the top of the pile. Now this book is inside my head, I don’t think it will ever leave. The tightly plotted drama of “Different Class” plays out in a way which is exciting and surprising, but the novel also says something meaningful about our shifting sense of values. I read this novel at a much faster pace than I read most books for the sheer pleasure of the idiosyncratic characters and the desire to know how their intriguing story would play out. Colour pervades Blueeyedboy. It dictates the way the characters respond and behave. More than one of the characters has synaesthesia, a condition that is central to the plot. Blueeyedboy is not an easy read; intensely thought-provoking, it’s also disturbing and confusing. Essentially, the gist of this book is that there's a 40-something guy named B.B. He lives with his mother, and spends big chunks of his life online, writing fiction about committing murder on Totally-Not-LiveJournal. He's part of a fiction writing group that focuses on villains, and the entire book is told in the fics and journal entries that he writes, with occasional additions from one of the other characters who's in his fic writing group, but who he knows in real life. Harris describes the book as literary Marmite, since fans of her previous books, such as Chocolat, seem to either love it or hate it. some of the best stories haunt you for ages, resurfacing at odd moments and make you question your life as you know it, this is one such book and for me emulates the feelings I had as a child after reading the real Grimm’s fairy stories – fear, excitement, wariness and yet greed for more of the same.

Another attribute that Monarch calls out is the fact that it is “Private & Exclusive. Monarch is only available to members and not to the general public. How does this contribute to the theme of perception and identity? Do your feelings about BB change when you realize how much he has lied to you?

It’s getting difficult to find my cookbooks in physical form, but they’ve recently all been published digitally right here… Is this the best book ever written? Harris’s achievement is not only in her story, in her insight and humour and the wonderful picture of small-town life in rural France, but also in her writing.
