Just as, at Carhullan, all roles (hunting, gathering, talking, listening, defense, attack) are filled by women, Jackie taps into brutality and violence as a human trait rather than a masculine or feminine one. A woman known as 'Sister' leaves her oppressive marriage to join an isolated group of women in a remote northern farm at Carhullan, where she intends to become a rebel fighter. Following economic collapse, the population has been corralled into the cities of old under the guise of Civil Reorganisation although it seems to me that the main benefit to the Authority is to have the population in a defined and manageable area.

With classics such as Ted Hughes's The Iron Man and award-winners including Emma Carroll's Letters from the Lighthouse, Faber Children's Books brings you the best in picture books, young reads and classics. She retains her poetic exactness, though: rock showing through the grassland is "the bones of an older district, stripped by the wind".

For me her interweaving of Nature (view spoiler) [ definitely with a capital letter (hide spoiler)] into her plot raises her story about the other novels that I have referred to above, but I'm easily impressed, after all I'm a fan of Casper David Friedrich and I love a suggestively symbolic landscape (view spoiler) [ or seascape, I'm not so fussy (hide spoiler)].

Her jawline was thicker, though still slightly misshapen, crooked, with the smile worn higher on the left, as if she had always favoured the teeth on that side when she ate .One thing which comes to the top of my mind when I think of this book is that it was gripping from the beginning to the end. The Carhullan Army, however, is the real thing: a hard book, unforgiving, surprising, and sometimes disturbing. The south-west barn range is built against the end of the north-west range, and its farmyard elevation is partially open fronted; further to the left there is an inserted chamfered, stone-mullioned ground floor window, a single ventilation slit, and a pitching door. It actually seems slightly jarring to see the setting referred to as ‘rural England’, with the connotations that has for me of Kent or Somerset.

Boasting free private parking, the holiday home is in an area where guests can engage in activities such as golfing, fishing and cycling. I liked this one a lot more than other dystopian books like Station Eleven, in which it bothered me that all these people lived around the Great Lakes, yet no one seemed concerned about preparing for winter. The room forming a bedroom in the rear range has panelling and six-panel doors now forming a fitted cupboard and a sliding door to an ensuite. You took such a lot of time over this very interesting review, Jan-Maat, and the novel seems perfectly suited to its own time and setting.
