In fact, this short chapter is simply an explanation of what is meant by the “basic properties of numbers,” all of which—addition and multiplication, subtraction and division, solutions of equations and inequalities, factoring and other algebraic manipulations—are already familiar to us.

Of the twelve properties which we shall study in this chapter, the first nine are concerned with the fundamental operations of addition and multiplication. I have had time to make only a few changes to the Suggested Reading, which after all these years probably requires a complete revision; this will have to wait until the next edition, which I hope to make in a more timely fashion. All that is necessary is a solid understanding of high school pre-calculus and mathematical curiousity. A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce. Most of all, however, I am indebted to my friend Ted Shifrin, who has been using the book for the text in his renowned course at the University of Georgia for all these years, and who prodded and helped me to finally make this needed revision. It is then possible to find the solution of certain simple equations by a series of steps (each justified by Pl, P2, or P3) similar to the ones just presented for the equation a + x = a.

Only after picking it up I figured why my Math professors said math is a beautiful and logical subject, I really can't stress how much this book changed my perspective. Of the twenty-nine chap­ ters in the book, two (starred) chapters are optional, and the three chapters com­ prising Part V have been included only for the benefit of those students who might want to examine on their own a construction of the real numbers. Considering that this book is a bit old and consequently uses unusual notations, the explanations are extremely good and the author's approach reminds me of the best Leonard Euler's texts.A few topics, like manipulations with power series, have been discussed more thoroughly in the text, and there are also more problems on these topics, while other topics, like Newton’s method and the trapezoid rule and Simpson’s rule, have been developed in the problems.

Considerable attention is paid to motivating the discussion, showing why each result is important (though mainly in the pure mathematics context, applications of calculus being mainly found in the problems at the end of each chapter). It is well structured, clear and precises, it made me love the subject because for the first time I saw it presented for the logical wonder it is, and as an assortment of formulas to be used. I was both startled and somewhat dismayed when I realized that after allow­ ing 13 years to elapse between the first and second editions of the book, I have allowed another 14 years to elapse before this third edition. Compared to other calculus textbooks, Calculus Michael Spivak 4th Edition is known for its rigorous and concise approach to the subject. I feel, for a serious mathematician, it is first-year level at best, though a reasonably bright and motivated high school student can easily get through the chapters, if not solve the exercises to utmost completion.
