It begins at a secluded spot on Hadrian’s Wall called Sycamore Gap when a walker finds a skeleton buried within the wall. Ryan and his team are called out to investigate. They soon realise however that this isn’t an archaeological find but is more recent. In fact, it’s the skeleton of a woman that has been in the wall for 10 years and the team has managed to identify the victim based upon dental records. Being honest, and maybe because I was listening rather than reading, I really didn’t see this one coming. There were the odd moments when I thought I knew, when I gave myself a bit of a knowing smile as I drove along (I should explain I was listening to audio, not reading and driving) and then something unexpected would happen and I was smiling that same smile, not for me but for the author. Excellent work. I loved it. I have digressed from the plot, but I think it’s enough to say great setting, good story well told, and creepy enough murders (without too many grisly details) to keep us guessing. Intrepid detective with good mates, but nobody's above suspicion in these. I don’t like spoilers, so I will try keep my review succinct as I don’t want to give away anything about the plot. I recommend you read the precious books before this one if you haven’t already.

There is so much history as well as stunning views and even though there are plenty of murders that occur, that certainly didn't put me off wanting to move there. If anything I thought that at least house prices would be cheap with such a high death rate! We spend time with Ryan and Anna, and I really like how easy they talk about the killings and Ryan doesn’t try to sugarcoat things “to protect her.” I do get tired of heroes always trying to protect the heroines, like the heroines are made of glass, or something. And, Ryan finally tells Anna about his sister and how Edwards killed Natalie, it was sad. When it was told what actually happened that day (Ryan was dreaming) it was really horrible, what Edwards did to Natalie. And later Ryan told Anna about going to see Edwards so Anna decided NOT to tell him she felt like she was being watched that day. Duh! AND Edwards is still an important player in this story, even if he is in prison.
