ps I think the only things I missed from the movie list were A Few Good Men (I was in the military, it’s a Hollywood idea of the military…pass) and The Bodyguard, which I skipped for the obvious reasons (bad writing, bad acting, bad singing). As such, original series colorist Claude Legris is now out of the picture, and though letterer John Workman remains on board with his own distinctive style, this new edition is still, for better or worse, Miller and Darrow’s baby. Carl's dog follows him onto the train as Carl finds a Willeford logo underneath the torn skin on his arm and realizes that Unit Two's story was true.The kind of astonishment and kick in the gut you get from coming face to face with extended volume and ornamentation. As I noted in the original post, I think Miller was forced into satire because Dark Knight was so over the top.

I will say, however, that simply looking at these pages as they are, it’s difficult to argue that this is a remarkably well-colored book. The robots represent all the employees that feel like faceless slaves and want to be treated right, be paid a fair amount of money and make a difference instead of being just another wheel in the machine. Darrow indulges in this and there is something delightful in seeing his folds worked out with such complexity – wrinkle over wrinkle over wrinkle. It’s slapstick Looney Tunes violence gone ballistic (a man gets his arm ripped off and then stabbed WITH it).

So with a head full of painkillers and limited mobility I was in a unique state of mind to spend time in Geof Darrow’s hyper brutal and elaborately dense drawings. The theme is similar to that of Masamune Shirow: a dystopian future where androids enforce ‘peace’ in a crowded, crime-ridden metropolis. Re the original post, Last Action Hero isn’t underrated, it’s a crappy movie with a few good ideas, most of which it mangles. Although I can’t spot exactly where it is, but Darrow has mentioned in interviews that he even has a battle scene that has one character with a shirt saying Godzilla and the other saying King Kong.
