I don't tend to cover Bluetooth speakers here at Audiophile On, but companies send a lot to our offices. By that, I mean a lot of very average or outright crappy Bluetooth speakers. I won't bother covering them most of the time as nothing about them really stands out. When we decide to write about one, it means that we think highly enough for us to recommend it to our readers.

Charging

Sound quality. Quite frankly this is the biggie. Pasce has managed to cram a three-inch neodymium motor system inside the Minirig's 72 x 101.6 mm dimensions (height x diameter). Frequency response is consequently an impressive 100-20,000Hz (+/- 3db within this range), but most surprising is a 15-watt digital amplifier in a speaker that weighs just 424g. This is roughly five times the circa three-watt amplifier we have come to expect from portable speakers of a similar size. There is a lot of choice when it comes to portable speakers that can be used with Bluetooth for general listening, but as soon as you add in the need for latency-free wired line-in (for DJing), that choice drops. The sound on a single Minirig speaker was matched only by the Beoplay A1 in my side-by-side testing. It managed to get louder and maintain a high level of detail before any JBL, Gear4, or Taotronics units started to distort. Even when pushed way past the comfortable listening point, the sound doesn't degrade as sharply as any of those units. The clarity and detail retrieved at normal levels are remarkable for something so small. Though small enough to take wherever you go, the MiniRig 3 delivers a sensational sound quality that’s wonderfully clean and balanced. Although you won’t get the same crispness as you’d get from a speaker with a dedicated tweeter, you get much more than you’d expect. No speaker is perfect, particularly when you’re searching for something that’s small and portable enough to take with you to any environment.

Various additions and changes make this speaker more impressive than ever, including a new custom-built 70mm driver with wonderfully deep bass, and a fantastic 100-hour battery life. Clearly the long and thin stereo approach is more desirable for enhancing the audio when watching video on a laptop or any other occasion where you’ll be sat directly in front of the speaker/s but for just blasting out music while camping, gardening, cooking, partying in your hotel room, a single loudspeaker does the job just fine. On a normal volume, you can expect a good sound base response down to around 80hz, thanks to the powerful main drivers. There’s dynamic equalization included within these devices to ensure that the sound remains as crisp as possible.Even if a speaker looks and feels amazing at first glance, it’s difficult to fall in love with the device if it’s tough to operate. Managing the MiniRig 3 portable speaker is very straightforward. Up to a really decent volume, these sound just great. Clear, full frequency, just really special for the size. Now, when DJing, we all know the tendency is to push things louder and louder. These are small speakers, and so past a certain level, they do struggle. It’s important to point out that they reach this level at quite some volume, but eventually you get there. At that point, the audio gets harsher and the bass is severely curtailed – but there is no real distortion, and the compromises the DSP makes are the right ones. In short, they are the best you are going to get at this size for DJing. With Bluetooth This little device can deliver some sensational power, with 40w of RMS to ensure you fill a whole room in seconds. In fact our existing Minirig has even survived a few rain showers and the new Minirig is specifically IPX4 rated for resistance to splashing water – Minirigs also claims it has an “air tight enclosure”. It won’t survive a trip to the bottom of a pool, but the general abuse you’d expect from a camping trip or being left at the bottom of the garden is something it will brush aside. The mining 3 is very similar to the previous product in its design. Throughout the years, this is a brand that’s stayed true to a constant focus on quality in design.

Keep in mind that there are also a host of additional peripherals that you can link to the MiniRig 3 from the same brand. After the cable has been inserted, you can then turn the sub off and on using the button by holding it down for 2 seconds. The sub will not turn on without an aux cable inserted. So where then does the Minirigs potential hit the ceiling? Where does it get to the point that it can't compete? Well, for that answer, I would say around about the Helsinki or Iloud. It becomes a matter of size and the amount of air you can move, and those two are far bigger speakers with much less battery life.It's the same as moving the speaker about 30cm away from you.... so really, how close you are to the speaker will probably have a greater effect. Anything below 15ms is generally not noticeable so it is fine for DJing, microphone, instruments, watching videos etc. As a speaker with a single driver, the MiniRig 3 goes above and beyond to deliver an unforgettable stereo sound experience.

Unfortunately, I have not tested or reviewed the Minirigs speakers with the addition of the, but I would look to doing this in the future. Stand-alone, the Minirigs speaker, has a lot of basses, so I’m not sure without testing whether it would be too much bass with a subunit or make it sound even more impressive.

The New Powerhouse

Used in low gain, the device gets adequately loud when used in combination with my Huawei P9 and iPhone 7, but when I pressed the single all-purpose button, it switches over to the high gain mode the Minirig begins to roar. The sound signature is V-shaped with peaky highs and big lows, but if you desire a different tuning, you can cut the highs or lows with the EQ and expand the midrange to give an overall flatter profile. Tips for a better-sounding Bluetooth speaker. You can access up to 100 hours of battery from this device, although it’s worth mentioning that the way you use your speaker will have an impact on the sound signature. A. Yes, they will pair in wireless stereo and via aux cables. However, for the best stereo sound we recommend using two of the same products. Also, the Minirig 3 in high gain mode is 6db louder than all other Minirig products so there will be a volume level difference. In low gain, the volume levels are all the same.
