There’s certainly a big enough performance gap for another TV to sit between the Hisense and the Samsung, and we’re pleased to report that the TCL 55RP620K fills it perfectly. There is also a ‘TCL Channel’ with a dedicated button on the remote, leading through to 80+ live channels and quite the collection of on-demand content, a lot of B-level stuff but some goodies too, partly by including Plex inside the TCL content. Across the US and the UK, TCL TVs are serious competitors in the budget TV space – especially during peak shopping periods. Then, these already competitive TVs can be discounted massively. You’ll often find TCL TVs with competitive features and specs sold at some of the lowest prices around.

This chip helps improve contrast, clarity, colour and motion and also looks after the upscaling of lower-resolution content. HDR format support covers every base, with HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision IQ as well as IMAX Enhanced all present and correct. It has three HDMI 2.0 ports and a 60Hz panel, but this TV can output 1080p @ 120Hz and 1440p @ 120Hz, with a wide VRR range through resolution halving. It's hard to notice the degradation in image quality of the resolution halving unless you're looking for it, making this one of the cheapest TVs capable of gaming at 120Hz. It has a decent response time overall, with incredibly low input lag, so the Q6 is a great product for competitive gamers wanting to buy a TV on a budget.

AI-CLARITY

The 2 x 8W sound system offers enough power to bring use to the vast proportion of the 0-100 volume scale on the TV and it takes until well up into the 80s before the audio becomes noticeably distorted. Leave the sound mode set to Normal –there are no DTS or Dolby Atmos modes to worry about – and you’ll find a performance that’s both consistent and clear.

As with those brands, TCL offers a wide range of TVs at different sizes and price points with different technologies and features. But its TVs are usually cheaper than equivalent sets from big brands such as Sony and LG, especially now that the Cyber Monday sale is in full swing.The picture was immediately impressive out of the box: the kind of visual punch that sells high-level TVs. It launched in Eco picture mode, which we initially switched up to ‘Smart HDR’. The luminance was mad, yet never crushing or flaring, but instead supporting crazily three-dimensional contrast and clarity between edges of objects; no apparent enhancement, just pure performance. There is always a cost vs performance question to consider, as cheaper televisions almost inevitably mean a drop in quality from their more premium counterparts.

Anyway, that’s the smallest of distractions from an image which combined brilliance with excellent motion handling and being set-and-forget across a range of material. Nor is there any problem watching on the sunniest of days with ambient light streaming in, given the brightness available here, combined with the TCL’s smart settings. Take that, OLED. Navigating the interface, or the fairly brief set-up menus, is a job for the comprehensive, logical and unremarkable-feeling remote control handset. Or you may prefer to use voice control – but here, again, is where things differ based on your location. UK viewers are prompted to add the TCL skill to your Alexa app (there’s ‘Works with’ Google interaction too), the Google TV model has Google Assistant built in, naturally. Picture QualityTCL TVs aren't as polished as other brands, as there are often issues with upscaling and local dimming. They also tend to have a wide variety of quirks to contend with. At CES 2020, TCL announced plans for a new fleet of Mini-LED TVs – to compete with OLED models – which use smaller LEDs for more precise brightness control than traditional LCD screens. Much like TCL’s US side, TCL UK offers up a slew of budget TVs with different features at different price points. From 720p TVs to 4K Mini-LED sets that cost thousands, UK TCL TVs run the gamut as well.
