Description

There is a choice of four diesel engines in the Caddy range, all 2.0 TDI units. Power outputs range from the entry-level 75PS through to 102PS and 122PS, right up to a range-topping 150PS version. Depending on power output the Caddy comes equipped with either a five or six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while there's an optional automatic DSG. The Caddy has also been sold with a broad range of 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 TSI petrol engines. The diesels are all based on the same 2.0-litre ‘twin-dosing’ turbo engine, and offer a choice of 75 hp / 250 Nm, 102hp / 280Nm or 122hp / 320Nm. The branding on this pouch is minimal, but Thule still makes sure you knows it’s their product by slapping a small-yet-prominent logo on the front. When testing the Thule Gauntlet 3.0 Laptop Sleeve, we found the logo on the front was slightly wonky, but we’re happy to report that this one is looking good. There is one small “Thule” tab on the inside too, because…well, we’re not too sure why, but it’s there. Maybe so you never forget that it’s a Thule product? Thule Subterra Powershuttle Plus 800D Nylon Despite a familiar silhouette it is only the cargo area that has remained largely the same, mainly so that existing owners will be able to transfer any specific interior fit-outs with ease.

Let’s deal with the touch-buttons first, a cluster of which replaces the traditional dial for the lighting controls and some of the window-clearing heating functions. Highlights of the new safety kit include Travel Assist, which combines the active lane-keeping with the adaptive cruise to help control the van at any speed. You may or may not find this ‘assistance’ annoying, but one of the great things about all the Caddy Cargo’s new safety stuff is just how easy it is to access the settings and tweak everything to your like. Inside, there are six lashing rings (eight in the Caddy Maxi) and the addition of new solid axles has meant that the maximum payload is 736kg. It doesn’t make it the class leader - the Transit Connect will shift up to 1000kg - but the Caddy is a good all-rounder . The 102PS 2.0 TDI Caddy, with its 250Nm of torque, offers a better blend of performance and economy, returning 67.2mpg with emissions of 109g/km. It pulls well and delivers decent power and overall drivability.The handles are ergonomically padded making them smooth to touch and push. They are adjustable to accommodate multiple pushing positions. Brakes What You Should Know: The expansion fabric is floppy, especially compared to the rigid foam of the remainder of the tech kit. That means the Caddy TSI is ideally suited if your business requires lots of shorter trips, where the petrol engine will operate in its efficient temperature range more often than a diesel would. The exceptions are for the seven-speed DSG automatic transmission, which claims 54.3mpg, and the highest specification models, which are down just over 1mpg due to the changes in standard equipment (including the wheels).

There won't be a Caddy Cargo electric van, as Volkswagen has gone all in on the ID Buzz Cargo, which is built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform.

At idle and at a cruise, the petrol engine is nearly silent, making this the most refined Caddy you can buy. Though sadly, this makes the Caddy’s excessive levels of road and tyre noise even more apparent – this isn’t a quiet van, despite the refined engine. How much will it cost to run?

The Powershuttle has a full clamshell opening which provides easy access to everything inside and makes it very easy to see what’s going on throughout the pouch. We like the opening, but the single zip is somewhat restricting. We would have liked to see two zippers on the opening as it would enable you to zip up the pouch from any point. We generally find two zips to be more user-friendly across the board…it’s not a huge issue on this pouch, but we’ve gotten frustrated with it a few times.

What’s the problem here?

It also uses a petrol particulate filter (PPF) to take some of the nastier emissions out of the exhaust gases. For those who’ve had issues with diesel particulate filters in the past, this might sound worrying, but there seem to have been fewer problems with PPFs – perhaps because petrol exhaust has less particulate matter in the first place. What’s it like to drive? As with its predecessor the Volkswagen Caddy is available in standard and long wheelbase - called the Caddy Maxi - versions, both of which are available with a number of rear-door options. Most buyers will opt for the standard front-wheel drive model, though for those who venture into more remote locations the Caddy is also available with 4Motion all-wheel drive. If you do plan to regularly max the payload, stretching to the extra torque of the 122hp will probably be worth it. But all of the diesels offer surprisingly crisp response to your right foot, suggesting real care and attention has been applied to the development and tuning. The standard model is a touch longer than it was before, the Maxi a touch shorter – which has exactly the kind of impact you’d expect on the load space. However, both feature lower loading-floors and can fit taller items inside, despite the vans having lower rooflines on the outside.
