Use Ensemble subtly to add harmonically rich otherworldly dimensions to your ambient reverb soundscape, or use it liberally to hear a lush, synthesized string section swell under your guitar playing. Ensemble reacts to your entire guitar signal smoothly, organically, and musically for a richly responsive and inspiring playing experience. As with a lot of the smaller Strymon pedals, there are secondary functions available by holding down combinations of controls during the power-up cycle. These are largely to change the basic functions of the pedal (analogue/digital dry-through; true bypass/buffered bypass, etc) and aren’t really functions that you’ll want to be adjusting regularly.These pedals are quite large but considering the fact that you can get all of those tones, their size doesn’t really matter. They have got smaller, dual footswitch pedals for specific applications too like the Riverside cascading overdrive and the Deco guitar doubler. These pedals are slightly more affordable but offer the same great tones in a more traditional format. The Class A JFET input here already makes its presence felt in the Cloud mode with some of the most touch-sensitive response we've encountered on a reverb pedal. The Cloudburst really is a joy to explore with headphones on a quiet evening, but in Ensemble mode it takes on a whole new meaning. Which brings us to the Cloudburst; a brand new pedal that has been causing waves in guitar culture for several reasons. Firstly, it’s a totally new form-factor for Strymon – a unique compact form factor that brings Strymon’s innovative and unique approach to DSP into its smallest footprint yet. Secondly, it’s a brand new ambient reverb pedal – the genre that, through the BlueSky and BigSky, catapulted the brand into the stratosphere. Alternatively, you can connect an expression pedal for continuous control over any of the knobs, or set up various footswitch functions. A single footswitch can give you access to one preset, while a triple footswitch lets you access three presets. There are three modes to this Ensemble effect. As the name implies, when the Ensemble switch is in the off position there is nothing added to your reverb sound, However in the middle position (mp) you are instantly greeted with a subtle addition of harmonics, and when switched to the last position (forte, our favourite) you get the maximum amount of string ambient. It’s a different flavour of the sort of modified ethereal reverb sounds that made Strymon’s name over a decade ago, and with the Jazzmaster in full shimmering clean mode, the Ensemble adds a wonderful sense of textured, string-like movement to our playing, as if you’re being accompanied by a faux orchestra. You’ll find some algorithms work better in certain situations than others, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg and finding out is half the fun. The amount of options here is staggering and certainly adds to the value of a pedal, which let’s face it, is probably not on a lot of people’s shopping lists due to its lofty price. However, it blows its smaller brother out of the water in every way, so we feel the price tag is more than justified. This ability to tweak and customize your sound is what sets the Strymon Cloudburst apart from other reverb pedals on the market.
