Indeed, Daniels portrays the whole “teenager suddenly finds herself with near-invincible superpowers” extremely … well, realistic is not the correct word—believably, I guess? But when the supervillain that killed her predecessor shows her intentions to bring destruction on humanity, Danny has to make decisions she thought she'd have more time to work out. The concrete is cold against my back and shoulders as I duck back behind the wall and try to press myself into the corner.

Keep in mind that Dreadnought is less than 300 pages—there is a lot of character development going on here for a slim book! I can totally understand Danny being affected by the sudden change in hormones because that really does cause bodily chaos for a bit. It's bad enough I'm quiet and like to be alone, bad enough I don't like sports even after he forced me to join the football team, bad enough I couldn't care less about cars.And just before we get started I want to emphasize that this is an ownvoices book - which is something that I think comes through in Danny's character. The powers transform her body, so her girlhood—once a total secret—is now visually impossible to hide.

It is not written particularly well, and it showcases some harmful perspectives that undermine the positivity that it could bring.Daniels lived in Ashland, Oregon until she was ten years old, where she was exposed to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, before her family moved to Los Angeles, California. There are some things, like hypertech, which certainly fit in the setting, but are a little bit harder to suspend disbelief for. I also really liked the conflict between the Legion of superheroes really wanting to make Danny feel welcome, but also just being absolutely not prepared to deal with the hateful transphobic comments of one of their own. Then one day, by being in the wrong place at the right time, she inherits the powers of the world’s greatest superhero: Dreadnought.
