In these instances, it’s common and cost-effective to simply use a non-breathable underlay – either lightweight or a reinforced bitumen membrane.While breathable membranes are becoming an increasingly popular underlay choice, they aren’t, by any means necessary. For many years, traditional roof constructions have used non-breathable underlays in conjunction with low level (eaves) and high level (ridge) ventilation systems. This traditional approach is both effective and proven. When installing flooring, it is essential to use the appropriate underlay. Tile Installation

Once installed, Schluter DITRA Matting must be protected against heavy mechanical loads to avoid loosening it from the substrate or other damage. It is advisable to place running boards (especially in the centre of material transports) to protect the membrane. Other protective measures, such as shielding of direct sunlight or protection from precipitation in exterior applications, may also be required. Carefully remove any moisture that may have gathered in the indentations of the studs before applying the thin-bed tile adhesive. Roofing underlays are one of the most important elements of a roofing specification, and choosing the right product is essential to ensuring the finished structure is weather-resistant and provides years of trouble-free service. Plywood underlayment is a second layer of plywood that is installed ON TOP of your plywood or OSB subfloor.

In DIYTileGuy’s opinion, this is a minimal product and should either be covered in a waterproofing product like Kerdi or simply select a different product. Individual courses of Schluter DITRA Matting are cut to size. Solidly embed the anchoring fleece on the underside of the matting in the adhesive so that its entire surface is bonded and immediately work it into the adhesive using a float or screed trowel. Among other tools, an orbital sander is well-suited for this purpose. Please observe the open time of the bonding adhesive. When initially positioning Schluter DITRA Matting, it is advisable to align and position the matting while slightly stretching it. This is best done with an additional helper. Tightly abut the individual membranes. Note: If the matting is only installed as an uncoupling membrane, side edges and ends of individual courses do not need to be sealed with Schluter KERDI KEBA Sealing Tape. Not Always. Some products, such as hybrid, have underlay built in, while others, like laminate, will require underlay. Each category has different needs based on application. Pro Tip: The seams where two membranes meet should be sealed only with the tape or sealant recommended by the manufacturer. Not all sealants are compatible with all brands of membranes.
