This is really a story about grief, mostly set several years after Trina's wife has left her, and Trina's failure to cope with it, and how real grief needs to be lived through and not wisped away by new age affirmations. The Seep is constantly, menacingly on at her to be happy, and her distress and self-destructive activities are not okay. Kaiko Nekton (voiced by Kathleen Barr) is Antaeus and Fontaine's mother. She pilots the Aronnax and is shown to have great mechanical engineering skills.

The Seep by Chana Porter asks many questions like: what would humanity and society look like if thoughts could actually create reality, if physical material was permeated with the spiritual, if enlightenment was only a sip or two of alien-filled water away? The Guardians, led by Nereus, a teenager, helped build the glass case, and many years later, instructed dragons to protect the case. Instead of pursing The Boys, The Deep remained on the beach, mourning the death of Lucy, the name he had given to the sperm whale. A World Oceans Authority satellite crashes into the ocean, and the Nektons are tasked with retrieving it. However, they soon encounter a new adversary, Alpheus Benthos, who brought down the satellite to steal the data stored on board. They soon find that the satellite is about to explode and have to figure out how to get it as far away as possible before it does. Trina, a trans-woman from the time before alien technology, when humanity changed genders with surgery and hormone therapy, is in a happy and fulfilling marriage with her wife, Deeba, until the day when Deeba decides she wants to become a child and live her life again. She asks Trina to be her mother in this second life, still sharing her reality but in an entirely different way than as a lover. This desire is something that is within the realm of the possible now thanks to the alien invasion called, "The Seep". It definitely has a surreal, dreamlike sort of quality to it. I wasn’t sure how much in-book-time was supposed to be passing. Sometimes it felt like years, others only months. There are some weird moments that will have you scratching your head, a bear cooking soup, a woman eating fish and crying about it because she can feel their pain as she eats them. A friendly face missing the way their fingers turned neon orange when eating Cheetos. The Deep is also self-conscious about the presence of gills on his torso. While this adaptation allows him to breathe underwater, he is acutely aware that most find them repulsive and is extremely reluctant to bare his torso because of this. Deep is made to confront his revulsion during his time with the Church with a drug-induced hallucination where his gills seemingly have developed autonomy and are capable of speaking to Deep. In his hallucinations, Deep's gills suggested that his shame over his own body prompts him to violate women's bodies.

They target criminals on the oceans and rescue people in danger, but sometimes call the Nektons for assistance in some situations.Trina Goldberg-Oneka is a fifty-year-old trans woman whose life is irreversibly altered in the wake of a gentle—but nonetheless world-changing—invasion by an alien entity called The Seep. Through The Seep, everything is connected. Capitalism falls, hierarchies and barriers are broken down; if something can be imagined, it is possible. I liked that this story explores the boundaries of identity and being; that being almost feels miraculous and The Seep gives humanity more agency in how they want to exist. I thought this was really interesting. I also loved the whole setup for this world and a lot of the ideas that it introduces. The majority of the book is set 20 years after an amorphous alien species called The Seep first entered our water system. Once they infiltrated or bodies, they showed us that they just want to help us be happy, and that we are all connected- to each other, to the Earth and the animals and plants- and that violence and capitalism are silly.

That's my problem with the whole book- it's all style over substance. There are just so many missed opportunities here for exploring the complexities of this radically changed world. I was really fascinated by the worldbuilding of this story; how a pervasive yet benevolent alien entity would irrevocably change humanity. Porter presented a very fascinating setting and there were some intriguing details, but sometimes the unique setting and details were more confusing than compelling in a mysterious way. Kevin Moskowitz was born in the mid 80s and, like all superheroes, was experimented on at birth by Vought International with Compound V. Kevin first became aware of his aquatic telepathy at nine years of age, as he began hearing the thoughts of every aquatic animal he encountered, whether at a pet store, aquarium, beach, or Red Lobster. At first, he believed was going insane; however, his mother deceived him, calling it a gift and that he was just born that way. Over time his body would continue to mutate, sprouting aquatic gills on his torso, a trait that Kevin was highly insecure about as he believed himself to be ugly and afraid that people would reject him. At some point, Kevin attended and graduated from Godolkin University and was ranked number six. Raja Chulan a myth (age: about 800 years), in the chronicle of the deep. He wanted to explore the underwater, and the guardians wanted to find Lemuria, so they built him a glass case which could be lowered from a barge. He married an underwater princess and discovered the long lost city of Dika. The Seep, despite their insistence that they are only there to help, they only want what’s best for the planet, they only want you to be happy- aren’t really giving you much of a choice in the matter. I think the only thing that bugged me was that there were a couple of themes briefly touched on that I would have liked more of an exploration of. In particular, later on in the novella it's hinted at that Trina has some resentment to people who can easily change their body as she went through her transition before The Seep had come to Earth so it was quite a struggle for her. I thought this was a really interesting idea but it only got a couple of sentences dedicated to it, I wanted more!And all that kept removing the spotlight from Trina’s emotional journey to the detriment of the story’s message, and leaving me feeling a bit disengaged. A novel that’s rapturously moving and as haunting a tale of love, loss and grief as you’ll read this year . . . If you’re like me and looking for some sort of escape this quarantine, this is as perfect a book as you could imagine.” His devotion to the Church is such that he even signed over his bank account to Alastair. He married his current wife against his own preference at Carol's insistence. I would read more by this author in a heartbeat-- and by the way, big ups to whomever designed that cover because it's gorgeous. I love the flowers. So given our setup, Trina should immediately know at least one reason why the fish lady is upset, right? Meat is murder and all that. Seems like an excellent place to show how The Seep informs Trina's understanding of the world around her and the actions of this woman, particularly because she has had several decades to get used to the intricacies of this reality.
