Scream Factory’s press materials proclaim the theatrical cut as coming from a “ new 4K restoration of the film from the negative”, and that it has been approved by Raimi, director of photography Bill Pope, and editor Bob Murawski. Given that pedigree it should be no surprise the 2160p 1.85:1 picture is often stunning, with the native 4K presentation exhibiting finer details and brighter colors than ever before. All of the early scenes in Lord Arthur’s courtyard, for example, look outstanding. The added boost of Dolby Vision/HDR10 provides a richer color palette. Film grain is intact and still looks heaviest during night scenes. Likewise, the many optical effects shots still appear rough because that’s just how it is. Still, videophile fans will be impressed by the image; it is a worthy upgrade. For the original Anchor Bay DVD release, substandard footage was inserted into the theatrical version (for comparison, see the alternate opening and ending on the first disc, which is equivalent to its former quality). Although this seems to be a port of a transfer from original elements, it appears that a cleaner and more polished version was available. It isn’t completely perfect as grain levels from scene to scene are probably more uneven than any other version in this set, but the rest appears to be the same as the theatrical version in all other respects. Army of Darknesstime travels its way to 4K + Blu-ray via Scream Factory in a big way. This Limited Edition Giftset has some wonderful goodies.

The release also includes an interesting "feature" (so to speak): unique disc art different Disc three is a Blu-ray with the director’s cut, while disc four is a Blu-ray of the international cut; both platters serve up extras too. As mentioned above, the latter features a 4K scan from the interpositive. There’s been some grousing online about why only the theatrical version is on a 4K disc, but, as they say, that was decided by folks well above my pay grade. It’s too bad that all versions of Army of Darkness couldn’t get the same kind of treatment as the Theatrical Cut, but even so, this is still a fine set. And the quality of the UHD presentation is definitely worth the upgrade. It’s not definitive, but it still comes highly recommended to primitive screwheads everywhere. The director’s cut adds 15 minutes of runtime to the theatrical version’s brisk 81 minutes. The differences between it, the theatrical version, and the international cut are too numerous to list in this review, so if you’re not already a fan, I would recommend watching all of them and deciding on your own. Personally, I’m usually partial to directors’ visions, so this disc has the one I like, including the aforementioned original ending that was changed after preview audiences gave the film poor scores. It was such an aftermarket success that Universal allowed Anchor Bay Entertainment to release a Director’s Cut of it on DVD... many times over. Personally, I prefer the Theatrical Cut more. The original ending, which involves Ash accidentally sleeping too long and waking up in a dead world, just doesn’t seem to jibe with the campy thrill ride that came before it. It may have been a more befitting end for a “loud-mouth braggart” like Ash, but it clashes with the overall tone. One thing’s for sure: if that decision hadn’t been made, we might not have gotten the Ash vs Evil Dead TV series.

Army of Darkness, with its demented madcap vision, marked Raimi’s true entrance into Hollywood-sized filmmaking, and you can trace a straight line from this, the final installment of a series that began as an indie feature funded by dentists with spare investment cash, to the director’s eventual helming of the Spider-Man franchise. Willfully glib but precisely assembled, the film remains one of the most entertaining films of the ’90s. Image/Sound A horde of deadites lay siege to the Ultra HD fortress with an impressive HEVC H.265 encode that exceeds expectations and pretty much puts the previous Blu-ray release to shame. Coming from brand-new restoration and remaster of the original 35mm camera negatives, the native 4K transfer, approved by Raimi and cinematographer Bill Pope, showcases incredibly sharp details for a majority of the runtime with a few soft, blurry moments sprinkled throughout. However, most of those are associated with the optical effects, compositing and matte photography, so they are to be expected and easily forgiven. Otherwise, the individual hairs of the cast, the threading in the costumes and the tiny pebbles on the ground are discrete, and the small fractures and imperfections along the castle walls are plain to make out from a short distance. Facial complexions appear natural with an accurate peachy-rose tone in every actor and lifelike textures, revealing every pore, wrinkle and negligible blemish. It was truly torture. Tim has delivered a look at Joel Schumacher’s Flatliners (1990) in 4K UHD from Arrow Video, as well as John Carpenter’s Escape from New York (1981) in 4K from Scream Factory. Disc one is the only 4KUHD platter in the set. It has a glorious new 4K version of the film’s theatrical cut from 1992. The only bonus item is the theatrical trailer.
