I'm currently TV Content Director on What's On TV, TV Times, TV and Satellite Week magazines plus Whattowatch. As they are waiting to head into the mainland, this weird fog begins to overcome the rig, and strange things start to happen. So I think that's what David's [Macpherson - the show's creator] script does really well, it's high octane, it's enjoyable, and then I mean, climate change is here, it's not up for debate and we should be very proud of what we achieved in the North Sea in terms of the feats of engineering, and being Scottish it's a part of our heritage we should cherish and it's still got a role to play going forward, but that role is getting greatly reduced. If some of these details seem a bit familiar to seasoned action-adventure fans, there is still plenty to keep them engaged, and the open-ended conclusion suggests there may be more to come. The others see her as pushing quotas and cost-cutting, all that kind of thing, so they think he’s the teacher’s pet.

Leck dies under mysterious circumstances after standing out in the fog, and Alwyn dies after a strange encounter with Baz. Schitt’s Creek actor Emily reveals that she now loves the drink, Irn Bru, thanks to her Scottish co-star Martin. Unfortunately the story itself is plodding, juvenile and populated with characters that are largely unsympathetic.In the future, Earth is abandoned to ecological catastrophe and humanity has migrated to the System to live on terraformed worlds.

But she's this woman who goes into this man's world and is unapologetic about it and doesn't care about being liked, which was something - I'm Canadian, we're sorry for everything, 'I'm so sorry I exist'. There are some shots where the exterior lighting feels unnatural, but the world of the rig does for the most part feel like a real, solid, liveable location - surely not least because parts of it very much are, having been purpose-built for filming.Overall a weirdly thrilling slice of SF, with a great deal of human reality to it and some great characters. This novel raises many questions and makes readers think about what is going on and what will happen in the story.

This outstanding novel is way above average science fiction, because the story gradually develops from an intriguing premise into a fascinating tale filled with complexity, weirdness and thought-provoking elements that make readers hold their breath in wonder. If there are any science fiction book clubs looking for a good read this week, I think The Rig is worthy of a mention, but with a warning–You will ask yourself an awful lot of questions when you read this book and some of them may have answers you’re not ready for. Except it isn't a surprise; it's the same reused trope of the magnificent bastard, which we see throughout fiction. The only storyline that even remotely matters is Alef’s and even then it doesn’t need to be this long. Flavoring the third-person narration with some great one-liners (“She had the voice of a lifelong smoker thrown in a blender”), Ducie takes his time setting the stage for the action-packed second half of the novel, with Drake carefully plotting an escape that involves the skills of his hacker cellmate, Tristan, and the knowledge of Irene, a fellow prisoner who hints at a conspiracy that eventually blows up in their faces.A tsunami is created and the rescued crew watches as it destroys the rig and heads towards the shore, presumably wiping out the coastline.
