Like, the whole premise of the novel seems to rest on Ella's unhealthy obsession getting out of control, but nothing ever really happens? Ella lusts after everyone and there is seemingly sexual tension in everything, but in the end ... nothing really happens. You expect there to be drama, but there is nothing. An eyebrow-raising scene that seems completely out of left-field, but overall not anything particularly exciting. I was in high school when WWII ended and married about two years to a WWII vet when our troops were fighting in Korea. There wasn’t much in the newsreels about it except vets coming home complained about the extreme cold and I remember news accounts of some of the battles.

Because of the dialogue and the actions of other men in this story, it reads more like a fiction story and by their conversations, they reveal their emotions. Other flight instructors saw Brown as an intruder. One whispered to him, “Nigger go home,” as they passed in a hallway. Another warned him that “a nigger will never sit his ass in a Navy plane.” Others rode him mercilessly when they took to the sky, calling him a “dumb nigger” if he made the smallest mistake. I was expecting much more from the continuous build up throughout the book. Without spoiling it for anyone, I personally felt like it left me with some unanswered questions, which of course was the intent but I was hoping for more of a clean cut ending. So the ending fell a little flat for me. Otherwise a great debut. I am looking forward to what the author comes up with next! 3.5 stars

I might add that, in contrast to many recent books, Devotion is well illustrated with an array of contemporary photos, well chosen, and reproduced both in the body of the text and in plates. Me ha gustado mucho, porque es un libro de Hannah Kent y Hannah Kent tiene un don para crear personajes cercanos que te tocan la patatita, PERO es un libro triste. La gente que dice que este libro no es tan triste como otros de la autora está mintiendo. Porque es tristísimo, por supuesto que sí, esta mujer no puede escribir comedias. Honestly, I was waiting for a twist that would completely blow my mind, but all of my guesses could not prepare me for the absolute nothingness of the ending. This could have gone in so many crazy directions and instead it just tapers out. Pretty disappointing. It began in June, 1950, and the initial push by the American Army, was overrun and practically chased out of the country by Soviet aircraft and Chinese soldiers. The US Marines, Naval and Army/Air Force fighters and bombers were brought in to provide support the Army.
