The vinyl came in very safely packaged in a box bigger than I expected to prevent damage to the vinyl. These guys can go on for hours about who their influences are, and in fact spend much of the album doing so. Very quiet in between tracks that aren’t gapless with lots of crispy bass and everything sounding even and true, levels are great and no discernible distortion towards the middle of the disc, probably helped by the fact that it’s a 2 disc affair and the run out on each disc is pretty large keeping a lot of the “music” towards the outer edge as much as possible. Ultimately, Discovery is less of a mission statement than its predecessor, but no less danceable or listenable.

I can't believe it took me until 2012 to actually get the whole album rather than only knowing 2 or 3 of the most famous singles. An exclusive unreleased track ('Ouverture') and several remixes (streaming only) were then accessible. With no frills or fluff, every original track on their third album from 2001 appears here in crunching glory, not sounding an inch rougher or time-weathered. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since.

Daft Punk's defining album comes directly from the horses' mouths, seeing a new vinyl edition in 2022 released via the ex-duo's own Daft Life Ltd. Aerodynamic" eschews breakbeats for an Yngwie Malmsteen-ish guitar interlude that somehow ends up meshing in a crazy blend of stomping bass lines and hyped-up harmonics. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" is a resounding standout amidst the retro/Vocoder deluge that transpired after Cher's Believe turned the kitchy disco device into a worldwide pop music trend, spinning a clever groove around an ever-escalating string of computerized seduction.

Edit: turns out it should have been obvious to me but anyway I figured it out by looking at the record cover closer. All the copies of 'Discovery' were released with a 'Daft Club' card included that permitted a web access to the Daft Club (Daftpunk. On Discovery, the follow-up to the 1998 worldwide smash Homework, the answer is obvious: they have no shame, and they know how to make us dance. It's much poppier than Homework and has most of the hits you might know by them (no "Around the World" though). There are dashes of 1999-era Prince and oodles of new wave and disco cheese, from Harold Faltermeyer and Gary Numan to the Bee Gees, all set off with efficient house beats.This album has some of the most infectious melodies and masterful sample work in the history of music as a whole. Everywhere on the record, gigantic beats are dropped with pinpoint precision, giving songs a momentum that transforms repetitive melodies into sudden revelations. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. So, I didn’t own this on CD, nor do I have the original vinyl so I can only talk of this version but I’ve been waiting for this (and the re-release of homework) for ages. Nightvision” is a mellow, wordless, Quiet storm-meets-Eno soundscape, while in an interpolation sure to gain plenty of attention, “Superheroes” marries a Barry Manilow sample to an unrelenting house beat.

The beat is so infectious that I found I absolutely had to move to the song while I was listening to it. Aptly, 'Discovery' was described by the duo as a reflection of their childhood memories, when they listened to music with a more innocent ear; 20 years on, Discovery can certainly be said to have lived up to that original inspiration.My other favorite tracks include "Nightvision", "Superheroes" (why do I actually think of comic book superheroes when I hear that song? Discovery is Daft Punk's best work in my opinion, and it was vital to me in developing my taste for Electronic music as a teenager.
