I watched the word ‘die’ being etched into an art bench designed for panelists by a youth group I worked with, a small protest but a stark reminder of the vulnerability and disillusionment already carved into the young. As always though Bateman comes to their rescue and ensured that my sympathy remained with them all with the exception of the villain Pink Harrison and his henchmen.

A man wanted to tell me about an altercation he had on a bus, he was angry, he was hurt, he blamed youth and society. When re-released in 2005 as a double A-side with "Sink That Ship", it peaked at number nine on the UK chart. The climax of the features the band performing on the stage of a crowded replica of The Globe Theatre. Are his publishers insulting our intelligence or have they discovered an enormous puritanical following?

The song paints a pretty bleak picture of booze Britain, describing revellers getting "lairy," women walking around with "no clothes on," and men in "tracksuits," starting fights for no good reason. But, while some credit the mayhem which ensued at one of the band's own club nights as inspiration of the song, others believe it describes the frightful scenes witnessed in the town centre after former drummer Nick Hodgson played a DJ set. He wrote the screenplays for the feature films DIVORCING JACK and WILD ABOUT HARRY and the popular TV series MURPHY'S LAW starring James Nesbitt. From the clashing of cultures squeezed into neighbourhoods living parallel lives, with littered pavements and graffiti bins. I Predict a Riot' follows several characters over a few weeks as events conspire to change all their lives.

The morning after, I remember being in my pyjamas, sat at the piano in my mum and dad’s house, hammering it out.

The song depicts some colorful British characters; "Man in a tracksuit attacks me," "Girls run around with no clothes on, to borrow a pound for a condom, if it wasn't for chip fat, well they'd be frozen. I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. Little did I know, a year later in 2012, that I would be asking what the effects of these riots were on the people of Nottingham, and how and why Nottingham got involved.
