Much of the humour in Hurdy Gurdy stems from Diggory’s twisted logic, such as his reasoning that the deadly pox prefers to travel north, or the many deceptively pious excuses he comes up with for his newly rampant libido. When he’s left to fill a mass grave, he typically overthinks and arranges the bodies according to Pythagoras’ theorem, to economise on space. I was so annoyed and upset by the book that I called my friend Marc, who shares much of my musical tastes. After listening to me, he noted that when this book came out, he had heard Donovan on Vin Scelsa's radio show, and had come to much the same conclusions from hearing the interview, but was glad that I was confirming his impressions. The fourteenth-century youth has considerable book-learning -- including much of the most up-to-date medical knowledge -- but all this is very much of its time. What I pitty is that the story ends after 'Open Road'. Ofcourse. Most are here for the 60s and the anthems like Hurdy Gurdy Man, Atlantis, Barabajagal, Mellow Yellow, Wear Your Love Like Heaven, Catch the Wind.. but to me there is so much more. Donovan's autobiography was quite the revealing read. Leaving home at 16 he scraped and got by doing odd jobs, sleeping outdoors at times, taking drugs and free to do what he wanted to do. He learned to play the guitar and became a super star with such songs as "Mellow Yellow", "Sunshine Superman", "Season of the Witch", etc...and goes on to meet the likes of Joan Baez, Dylan, The Beatles, etc... I always thought Donovan got a raw deal in the endless comparisons with Dylan. I still think he is better. (They 'hung out' together quite a lot.) For anyone who was around in the 60s this is a great read. Donovan socialised or worked with just about any 'name' you can think of from those days of 'free love.' And Donovan got plenty of that too. The speed at which he moved from bumming around St Ives and learning guitar to releasing records and performing major gigs is amazing. Less than a year. I never realised how huge he was in the USA. The drone strings produce steady sounds at fixed pitches. The melody string(s) (French chanterelle(s), Hungarian dallamhúr(ok)) are stopped with tangents attached to keys that change the vibration length of the string, much as a guitarist uses his or her fingers on the fretboard of a guitar. In the earliest hurdy-gurdies these keys were arranged to provide a Pythagorean temperament, but in later instruments the tunings have varied widely, with equal temperament most common because it allows easier blending with other instruments. However, because the tangents can be adjusted to tune individual notes, it is possible to tune hurdy-gurdies to almost any temperament as needed. A lot of people set out to make a kit instrument with the thought that they'll save a lot of money and get a high quality hurdy-gurdy. It's a nice thought, but not very realistic. It's true that most kits are significantly cheaper than a completed instrument. It is imperative for a serious young student of music to choose at least six geniuses of the genre you are wishing to join. You must learn all of the repertoire of at least two of them.
