However, there were two issues that made my reading experience slightly less than ideal: 1) it’s was a bit repetitive; 2) his personal stories were too long— could’ve been summarised without losing the wisdom they impart. In his book, Mind Management, Not Time Management, David Kadavy makes the case that time is not the real problem here. By really understanding how your brain works, you can have a framework with which to understand what is going on with your mind, and thus, you’ll be better equipped to know how to better use your precious mental energy.

There were a number of practical ideas all crowded into small chapters with personal stories which made it difficult to follow. I have found myself forced to adopt a Generate mental state during evenings or mid-afternoons, after a long day. I’m no GTD expert, and I think GTD needs to be modified for each, but I think he’s talking about a Tickler File, not an inbox.

While the book has some good ideas, it might be hard to follow in real life when things are unpredictable. Finally, Kadavy explains how to leverage the power of Creative Cycles and how to develop Creative Systems that are repeatable and applicable to any of your current and future projects. I understand how the author perfected his own creativity system, and there are some useful nuggets there, but is it something applicable to every life?Great point that state of mind/attitude matters much more in certain areas then time frame (and maybe in much more then we think). I felt this book's aim, or marketing spiel, is to give you tips you help you structure your creativity and productivity in an easy-to-do way.

This book was part memoir, part personal classification and management of creative moods, and some mixes of the two. I have used that approach in my own task management system for the last several months, and have benefited by looking at tasks by mental state when determining the next thing I need to work on, as well as blocking time in my calendar for tasks according to mental state.If you're in a place where you're mostly working solo or driving a creative venture (podcast/writing/self-branding empire) then this is a nice read to see how someone in the same boat solved his issues and built his routine, with (quite a large amount of) personal stories splashed in for color. It’s not the first book I would recommend for productivity or creativity, but it was just right for me and the work I’ve been struggling with. I have been thinking and writing a lot about Creativity Systems, so I could be guilty of fitting his arguments to my mental model, but it is encouraging to me.
