To that point, one of the primary quibbles with HDR10 has been the "set it and forget it" variable when it comes to color, contrast, and black levels. One that starts off kind of creepy and odd, but slowly becomes normalized to the point where they seem more human than the ones in charge of hunting them down. After that begins a piano driven musical bit during the opening “replicants” text, which sounds splendid. Blade Runner 2049 is an excellent film with stunning visuals that smartly expands upon the world and themes of the original while charting its own course with compelling new characters. From the opening first scene, and the literal opening of an eye, you will behold the massive amount of detail to be found here in 4K, but more on that later.

The positioning and steering of effects are seamless as gunshots zip past, Spinners throttle across the screen and waves crash along the Sepulveda Wall in the film's climax. So, even if Dolby Vision provides a more compelling color experience, on the whole, that would need to be balanced with the resolution and freedom from digital artifacts with the higher bitrate disk format! For example the "scanline" banding over electro-Joi's left shoulder and up the neck blurs out in the 1080P version. As clean as dialogue is, there are long stretches of silence where no one is talking and all you're left with is atmosphere. With 13 Oscar nominations and no wins, Deakins is long overdue for the Academy recognition he rightly deserves.

Now, looking at this film from a visual aspect here, in terms of filmmaking, I have to honestly just first geek out.It's the kind of movie experience that encourages you to upgrade your sound system and turn up that dial as far as you can so you can bathe in the sonic joy of a smart and balanced audio track like this. From the moment the film opens with a speaker-blowing modern retread of that immense cycling down bass note that announced the original Blade Runner to the world, the soundtrack is never less than a spine-tingling masterpiece.

This is one of the finer Atmos mixes I’ve experienced, and one I pick off the shelf when I’m looking for some equal blend of “demo material” sequences, which this is full of, and importantly one that is just perfectly mixed. To Be Human: Casting Blade Runner 2049 (HD, 17:15) – This is another interesting featurette, this time looking at the casting of the film, from the major roles to the smaller but equally as important ones. There’s a immaculate amount of detail in every scene of this film, especially when presented in 4K with HDR.Roger Deakins captures every minute detail with wide expansive vistas and long takes that allow your eyes the freedom to wander. Fine detail is excellent, whether it's the track conveying the crunch of footsteps on snow or the noise Joi makes when she transitions. For the week that ended on January 27th, Warner Home Entertainment's Blade Runner 2049 kept its hold at the top of the Blu-ray-only and overall package-media charts. It’s a very intriguing story, although in fairness it can be a bit slow at times, and its overall story is something that makes more sense upon multiple viewings (for most). Blade Runner 2049 builds a whole universe of big questions to answer; layer upon layer of metaphysical reflection which could fuel a whole franchise that fans might actually champion to see.

As Dolby Vision allows the filmmakers to actually fine-tune the HDR grading from shot to shot, scene by scene, you're able to get a more intricate look at the image. Once that opening sequence is over and we are in some scenes driven more by dialogue and action you’ll notice great use of the Atmos (height) speakers and rear channels as K’s engine roars when he lands or later when the wind passes by.A mind-bending blend of spectacular dynamics, sensational detailing, irresistible atmosphere, stunning clarity and, best of all, monumental scale.
