This was a really interesting comparison for me. Fuji Superia does have quite a lot going for it, much more than I gave it credit for. In the close-up pictures above, we can see that Superia does have more noticeable grain than Portra 400, but with that being said, I’d still say it’s pretty good.

It has been significantly affected by recent price gouges, but is it still worth it though? The answer would be yes. Now, once again, I’ve only got on picture with someone in it and it’s not the best picture to show skin tones with.

I’ve actually mistakenly shot with this film on a trip to the dragon in 2017. Only film Walmart had left and the CVS in DC had the same. It was all expired as well but I didn’t care. I shot it on my Nikon F5/50MM 1.8EAfter that, it is where I did not do the film any favours and left it in the camera for almost another 3 months. Superia is more worth it because at the time of writing it is a good bit cheaper. Is it worth using it on holiday? Probably. Is it worth using it for some semi-important portraits? Probably also. The triumvirate of LH-PJ, LH-PL, and Ecomaxx-T long-, medium- and short-run plates possesses Fujifilm's proprietary MultiGrain surface treatment technology, which gives each of these plates enhanced durability and remarkable ink/water balance on press, translating into faster, cleaner roll-up and faster restarts for decreased makeready time and waste. I have tried Kodak UltraMax 400 (and Max400, but I think it’s the same?) and been really disappointed. Pretty washed out and feeble colours compared with my favourite emulsions. But that’s just my experience from maybe half a dozen rolls. It does work pretty well flipped over though and used as DIY redscale! What’s exposure latitude? Exposure latitude is essentially how much a picture can be under or overexposed while retaining as much information as possible. Basically, Portra 400 has very good exposure latitude, which means you’ll get more information from the shadows and highlights.

Fujifilm Superia 200, 400, 800, and 1600 were used with the Hexar AF, the Leica CL, the Nikon F90, the Pentax 67 (yes, I’ve played with some of it in 120). The film has a medium contrast and saturation, although in many shots the colors came out to be quite muted when scanned. Superia X-TRA 400 has generally cooler tones than Kodak, with more of a focus on blue highlights.I guess this is the important question because I think it’s quite complicated, I think Superia has a place (for as long as it’s still around). All current films in the Superia range list the following layer composition in their product information. Fuji Superia’s lush greens are usually perfect for festival and outdoor scenes, but Venus 800 is a slightly more muted, cool affair. I found none of the almost over-saturated colour here, instead a realistic rendering of skin tones, grass, and a slightly blue cast – very subtle, and not too noticeable. Though most sources, including Wikipedia , categorize Superia as a consumer/amateur-oriented film, it’s built on the same technology as one of the most sought-after colour emulsions: Natura 1600 .
