In the first brisk days of autumn, a woman arrives in Scotland having left her job at an all-girls school in London in mysterious circumstances. Moving into a cottage on the remote estate of Hare House, she begins to explore her new home. But among the tiny roads, wild moorland, and scattered houses, something more sinister lurks: local tales of witchcraft, clay figures and young men sent mad. A little too much meandering and not enough plot for me and I think I'd have liked a bit more folk lore threaded through it too. No specific spoilers; but discusses some points that you might want to read about in the book first. As we learn that our nameless narrator has fled London and her previous job at a private girls’ school in mysterious circumstances, we begin to wonder what made her sixth-form class of fresh, young girls fall down “like petals from a rose”. Who was the victim of this mass fainting? The seasoned teacher grown bitter as love turned sour, or the smirking teenage girl with a “high, light silver” laugh? Cottage is in an excellent position right in the centre of town and really easy to get everywhere using Chipping Norton as your base."

Although, I'm not seeing the same gap in information that a few other reviewers have stated. I think it was made fairly clear what happened at the narrator's school and why she moved to Scotland. There's clearly something mysterious going on with the narrator, and having more focus on that might have answered some of those questions I was left with.

My difficulties with this were partly linked to the fact that the tension between the psychological and the supernatural wasn’t resolved in a way I found particularly convincing, and partly to the representation of older and/or single women which seemed quite stereotypical. Although, to be fair, none of the characters came off that well overall: the dog was qui We follow a woman who moves into a cottage on the estate of a formally grand Scottish manor and begins to get to know the inhabitants of the main house. But as the snow sets in and all communication with the outside world is cut off, things begin to get sinister… Make your way next door to the lovely kitchen/diner where you'll find all the usual mod cons are provided including a gas hob and oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave. Hare House is not its real name, of course. I have, if you will forgive me, kept names to a minimum here, for reasons that will become understandable...

When we had a sight issue with hot water Manor Cottages were swift and courteous in sorting it out. It’s very clean and well appointed. Well equipped kitchen and large living room. Extra armchair would be useful for 6 people to be more comfortable.

Perfect for a winter break as it is so close to great pubs, restaurants and shops. We would thoroughly recommend it. This pretty property, set just 1.5 miles from the pretty village of Carlton-in-Cleveland, is the ideal retreat for couples or a small family who want to bring their loyal hounds along. Sleeping four across two welcoming bedrooms and with plenty of space for two dogs inside and out, where you will find an enclosed paved area with feature hot tub, this cottage is an opportunity to get away from busy modern life and relax among the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside. Take the pups on walks around Osmotherley (9 miles) or take a day trip to the coast where they can run free on the beach. The house was completed in 2018 and has westerly views to Cambridge and the surrounding countryside. A beautiful, slow burn of a novel, eerie and shimmering in equal measure. The bewitching prose brilliantly evokes the bleak glories of a remote Scottish landscape, while the subtle shifts of plot and perspective lure the reader towards an unsettling denouement where nothing is quite what it seems. So the positives first- it's decently written and the prose helps the story flow. Hinchcliffe isn't too flowery and keeps it moving.
