If you’re into mixing music as a DJ or just fancy something loud and happy to listen to then these might just be the pair of speakers for you. They certainly have enough drive to keep you entertained. If you want to listen for yourself then come down to Richer Sounds for a demonstration. With built-in amplification, there's no need for a separate amplifier. With a punchy Class D amp built-in, these speakers are more than capable of making themselves heard on your mixing desk. Simply plug the active speaker into the mains and connect the other, passive, speaker via conventional speaker cable. For a compact and cheap studio monitor the Pioneer DM-40’s have plenty going for them when it comes to sound quality. This speaker is as compact and portable as the Pioneer DM 40 speaker. Although it delivers a tremendous flat response to help you analyze your music, it's not precisely perfect for casually listening to music like the Pioneer DM 40 speaker. But it's an excellent choice for the audio enthusiast who needs a budget speaker to help them analyze the depth of their favorite songs. If you are hard-pressed to invest more into your monitoring system, then you can rest assured that the DJ DM 40s will still be impressive for your DJ practice, and casual listening. We would also like to make clear that it is also entirely possible to produce music on sonically inaccurate speakers.

Hi. I have recently bought a ddj 400 and looking for a set of small speakers I can use for house parties. BBQs etc. I don’t want any too big. To establish a connection with the speakers, you'll have to do it with the left speaker as it carries the necessary ports to establish the required connections. Of course, you’ll need speaker wires to establish the connection to your speaker. This 2-way active speaker has an AB amplifier embedded in the left speaker. You’ll also find connections and controls for the speaker on the left speaker. One limitation to this speaker is that you can't swap which speaker functions as a left or right speaker. If you want a flexible speaker placement, you can achieve it with the available audio connections and how long your power cable is. They are not as lightweight as they may seem, but that is indeed beneficial. Many of the low-tier cabinets are made out of plastic, whereas the DM 40 speaker cabinets are made out of wood. When it comes to compact studio monitors the Presonus Eris E3.5 is another excellent option. More suited to analytical listening than the DM40’s but not as satisfying for casual listening.

The main downfall though is that the frequencies are not well balanced. If you are into music production these are not ideal. Of course, it's thanks to the diffuser that deploys the classic Pioneer DECO technology to ensure the high frequencies it produces spread across the room. As a result, you could be far away from the speaker but still hear the music it plays. However, you have to be in the same room as the speaker to listen to the song's being played. The best thing about the diffuser is that it ensures the speaker only produces clear and smooth sounds that won't be polluted by distortions, regardless of how high you increase the volume. Truthfully, the bass isn’t excellent, but it's not bad either. But you would only appreciate it when you play it alongside a speaker that functions in a similar capacity as this speaker. It would fill up a small, enclosed space. Nevertheless, the bass is still punchy, warm, and deep enough for beginner DJs.

What does stand out is that Pioneer succeeded in delivering on its promise of low distortion. Even as the speakers get quite loud, there is no noticeable harshness. The DM-40 monitors feature a built-in Class A/B amplifier (left speaker) that delivers 2x 21W with amazing audio response and clarity. Perfect for use as reference monitors, or for your home studio / production set-up. The front bass reflex speaker delivers rich and deep basses, capable of 3D stereo sound and has a wide stage picture, providing clear, lively sound even when used for mixing music or just listening to music. Before we dive deep into the review, here are some of the features you stand to gain when using this speaker. The cabinets' DECO convex diffusers provide maximum rigidity and minimum resonance for a clean sound at all volumes - and they look great in your home set-up.

The low end is most certainly accentuated on the Pioneer DM-40s. Whether that is good, depends on what you want from your monitors. Dexter has worked in the music business since the early 1990s.
