Amendment 2 comes into effect immediately when published on 28th March 2022 and the previous version, BS 7671:2018+A1:2020, will be withdrawn six months later. Indent (ii) however requires the use of overvoltage protection devices to protect a Safety Service. This is defined in Part 2 as; “An electrical system for electrical equipment provided to protect or warn persons in the event of a hazard, or essential to their evacuation from a location.” Completing an 18 th Edition course will ensure you have a full understanding of the BS 7671:2018 wiring regulations. You will also gain certification – the 18th Edition is one of the most highly recognised qualifications for employers, having this qualification may open more doors for you. Not having this qualification can make it difficult to secure work – many large companies require this qualification as a bare minimum from potential candidates. What’s the difference between 17th and 18th Edition?The current version is BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (the 18th Edition) issued in 2022, and came into effect from 28 March 2022 (the previous version BS 7671:2018+A1:2020 being withdrawn on 27 September 2022). BS 7671 is also used as a national standard by Mauritius, St Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Cyprus, and several other countries, which base their wiring regulations on BS 7671. The wiring regulations have been regularly updated ever since to reflect both new developments in wiring and updated modes of best practice. They remained the responsibility of the Society who later became known as the Institute of Electrical Engineers. They now tend to be referred to by their acronym, the IET. Over the years, regulatory standards across nations and continents have become increasingly aligned. This began in 1981 when the regulations aligned with those of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In 1992, the British Standards Institute ( BSI) formalised the wiring standards under BS 7671. More recently, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization has harmonised wiring regulations further. If a property is newly built or has been completely rewired, it should have an Electrical Installation Certificate known as an EIC.

If a local authority has reasonable grounds to believe that a landlord is in breach of one or more of the duties in the Regulations, they must serve a remedial notice on the landlord requiring remedial action. The electrical safety industry has established competent person schemes. Membership of these will not be compulsory to ensure there is no further pressure placed on the industry, nor undue burden placed on inspectors and testers. This is still a consideration for the designer of the installation with Regulation 531.3.2. To achieve this, they should ideally ensure there is no more than 30% of the rated residual operating current due to protective conductor current and/or earth leakage currents (i.e. 9mA for a 30mA device). There is a new indent (ii) to consider the use of RCBOs as opposed to split load arrangements for this purpose.
