Description

Two separate batteries mean you can switch one battery when the device is turned on (hot swap). However, you will almost have to close the display for the removal. This battery is also used first on battery power. Recharge almost empty batteries and you will see that the removable battery is once again used first and recharged to 80%, after that the internal battery is completely recharged to 100% and then the rest of the removable battery is recharged. The T440 only needs about 45 minutes for the first 80% of the removable battery, and another 45 minutes for 80% of the internal module. After that, it takes another 128 minutes before both batteries are completely charged. The ThinkPad T440s is made to get things done, and it's built with the ports and connections to get things done. On the right-hand of the laptop you'll find an USB 3.0 port, a LAN port for Gigabit Ethernet, an SD card slot (SD, SDHC, SDXC), and VGA output for connecting to older monitors and projectors. On the left are two more USB 3.0 ports (including one with charging capability), a miniDisplayPort, and a slot for an optional SmartCard reader. While that miniDisplayPort will connect you to plenty of monitors, I would have liked to also see an HDMI port, allowing broader connectivity with monitors and HDTVs alike. The Lenovo ThinkPad T440 has a screen size of 14 inches. For its dimension, the non-touch models of this laptop measure 339 x 232.5 x 23 mm (W x D x H). Therefore, it is safe to describe this laptop as having a basic look with no sophistication. However, the laptop is quite durable thanks to its chassis made of magnesium alloy. This processor has a based frequency of 2.10 GHz. It also has a boost frequency of 3.30 GHz and 4 MB cache memory.

Basically, the two storage options above are both SATA HDDs, but they have different revolutions per minute (RPM). Hence, the option with a 7200 RPM SATA HDD will rotate faster than the second option – making it a better option. For comparison: The Dell Latitude E6440had an HD+ display with an average brightness of 314 cd/m²and a maximum contrast of 389:1; the thin Latitude E7440can also beequipped with an optional Full HD IPS panel (matte, non-touch) in addition to the base configuration with an HD panel. Our review determined an average brightness of around 300 cd/m² and a contrast of 869:1 for the Full HD version. Our recently reviewed HP EliteBook 840 G1 (HD display) is also slightly better with an average brightness of 280 cd/m² and a contrast of 405:1. Nevertheless, I have decided to rate the Lenovo ThinkPad T440 an eight in this section. This is because the laptop is available with a more powerful graphics option than the one evaluated above. Lenovo ThinkPad T440 Battery Life and Performance Review The available ports cover a wide segment of the connectivity spectrum and offer the right connection for many situations. We only measured a brightness of 130 cd/m² on battery power at first. Even adjusting the settings inside Lenovo’s Power Manager did not increase the luminance. Only Lenovo’s energy profile “Maximum Performance” provided the full brightness on battery power.In the benchmark test, the Lenovo ThinkPad T440 had a write speed of 2171.68 MBps. On the other hand, it had a read speed of 1827.54 MBps. In conclusion, the Lenovo ThinkPad T440 does not look sophisticated, but it has a rugged build. Unfortunately, it comes with fewer USB ports than some business laptops. It has been a while since ThinkPad enthusiasts had to face the redesigned keyboard – the change from the classic to the island-style keyboard that was very popular at the time. Lenovo promised that the new keys use the same mechanics as before and therefore provide the familiar and convenient typing experience, as well as a direct illumination of the keys instead of the retired Thinklight. Furthermore, in this review, I will be comparing this laptop with other laptops in its category. I will also be showing the laptop’s performance in benchmark tests.

The preinstalled Dolby software can slightly improve the sound quality and you can clearly hear the difference when you deactivate the software. The sound is pretty thin and focused on high tones in our opinion. The maximum volume (white noise: 84 dB (A), 53 sone) on the other hand is decent and sufficient for rooms of 20 - 30 m² (~215 to 323 sq ft). The sound quality is okay for a notebook of this size, especially when you consider the typical environment of the T440. Intel HD Graphics 4400 in processor, supports external analogue monitor via VGA and digital monitor via Mini DisplayPort; supports three independent displays; max. resolution: 1920x1200@60Hz (VGA); 3840x2160@60Hz (DisplayPort via Mini DP cable) Alternative processors for the T440 include an i5-4300U, i5-4200Uas well as the i3-4010Uentry-level version. Our benchmark comparison clearly shows that our i7 version has a noticeable lead of +13%, +33% and +46% (compare 4300U, 4200U and 4010U) in the Single-thread test. The advantage over the i5 chips is, however, rather small in the Multi-thread test, only the i3-4010 is significantly slower due to the missing Turbo Boost.It has been almost two years since we reviewed the direct predecessor, the Lenovo ThinkPad T430, but a lot has changed in that time. Powered by Intel’s Ultrabookinitiative, cases get smaller, very efficient processors offer the same level of performance, but the power consumption and cooling requirements have been reduced significantly. Modern business notebooks have to be sufficiently mobile and also nice to look at. What is the ThinkPad T440, the last device from the T440-series in our editorial office, capable of? Compared to the predecessor, the honorable ThinkPad T430, we think that especially the case has been improved. The chassis is now considerably thinner, the weight has been reduced and the design is now up to date as well, at least for ThinkPad standards. Unlike the T431s, which had a warm right palmrest that made typing uncomfortable, the ThinkPad T440s stayed pleasantly cool throughout our testing. After streaming a video for 15 minutes, the touchpad measured a cool 81 degrees, the keyboard a chilly 84 degrees and the underside a breezy 88 degrees Fahrenheit. We consider temperatures below 90 degrees imperceptible and those under 95 degrees comfortable. On the right side, the part of the wrist rest that sits above the optical drive and smart card reader is easy to compress. Between the unchanged (and excellent) display hinges,the display frame is quite bendable, belying our previous impression of premium quality. The area above the battery compartment is also in need of improvement; when the battery is absent, it can be compressed with even minor force. The large, 3.9 x 2.75-inch buttonless touchpad provided accurate navigation around the desktop. Despite its smooth surface, we were able to move around without our finger slipping and without a hint of the jumpiness that we've experienced on many other buttonless touchpads. Multitouch gestures, such as pinch-to-zoom, rotate, swipe in from right for charms, swipe in from left to switch apps and four-finger swipe to minimize all apps, worked smoothly.

Furthermore, the laptop features three storage options to choose from, with the addition of a 4-in-1 card reader. Also, users can either decide to go for a touch or non-touch model of the laptop. The test model sports a large, 100-Whbattery, offering a large reserve of energy. The battery bridge system that users may know from the ThinkPad T440sor the ThinkPad X240, with internal and switchable batteries, has not been realized in the T440p. As an alternative, a 6-cell battery with 56 Wh is available, though it offers a correspondingly lower battery life. Make sure you're one step ahead of the game. It can be difficult to keep up with the latest technological advancements when it comes to keeping up with all the latest and greatest. The immediate and long-term benefits of investing in new technology are clear. Prepare for the future with a Lenovo Ideapad 5 Series 11th Generation laptop that will last for many years to come. Nevertheless, the overall performance of the Lenovo ThinkPad T440 is satisfactory. Therefore, it is recommendable. Thanks to the two flexible hinges, you can open the laptop’s lid with just one hand. These hinges are located between the base of the lid and the laptop’s base, and their job is to hold these two parts together.We can eliminate any concerns that the low fan activity results in high case temperatures. During idle or light workloads, there are no surface temperatures above 30 °C (86 °F). In addition, an extreme scenario (stress test) only results in uncritical temperatures below 40 °C (104 °F). The T440 is even pleasingly quiet under load. We can only measure 33.0 dB(A) during 3DMark 06. Our stress test with simultaneous load for the CPU and the GPU only results in a temporary and minimal increase: 33.5 dB(A) or 1.9 sone are the maximum value we measured. However, unlike an integrated graphics card, the dedicated graphics card has Video RAM that is useful for improving its graphics processing capabilities. Hence, the NVIDIA GeForce GT 720M graphics card comes with a 2 GB DDR3 VRAM.

That Lenovo failed to fix known weaknesses of the case and builds outmoded displays (with the exception of the IPS FHD) even into the Premium T-series. In addition to the primary storage options we have talked about above, Lenovo added a 4-in-1 card reader to this laptop. Thankfully, this will provide additional storage space. The Lenovo ThinkPad T440 comes with two memory slots. The primary memory slot that comes with 4 GB of RAM is soldered to the laptop’s motherboard. The hatch is secured with two screws and can be prized open relatively easily. This offers the user access to nearly all components. Lenovo explains in its hardware maintenance manual which components can be switched out without compromising the warranty. The user can fairly easily swap in a solid-state drive for the conventional hard drive and add an additional module of memory (one slot is open). The fan is easily accessible and can be cleaned when necessary. Warranty

Lenovo lists conventional HHDs, an accelerated SSHD, an SSD cache or an SSD in the specifications of the device, but all pre-configured versions in German shops only had the slow conventional hard drive or an SSHD solution at the time of this review. Still, many shops offer an SSD upgrade, which is without a doubt the more appealing solution in general, especially if you need more storage capacity.
